Unwrapping a Frozen Edition

Does anyone have personal experience, or know anyone who has unwrapped a Red M3 "M Performance Edition" ??

The "story" is that these models are just normal gloss Japan Red that has had a matt (frozen) wrap put on it. Have been told that it is as easy as removing the wrap, and a quick detail, and you have a normal gloss finish. But this came from a salesman trying to sell a car, so he would say that wouldn't he !

I am told this only applies to RED ones, the White, Blue etc, are actually a true matt paint finish.

Any informed comments appreciated.

THANKS.

If it is a frozen edition it is not wrap. The top coat gives the matte appearance. It is a nightmare to maintain as scratches can't be polished out and more serious damage is extremely hard to repaint and requires a specialist.

Thanks for you replies, have spoken to BMW who confirm that of all the Frozen colours, only the Red is a wrap.

But still would like independent confirmation that unwrapping is possible without massive expense.

Will try posting this in the M3 section.

Thanks.

Oh sorry about that. There are references to it being a paint, but a press release states it’s a wrap. Interesting. The number one question I would be asking is what is underneath the wrap.

Assuming the substrate is something you would be happy with a wrap is normally easy to remove if it is removed within a couple of years BUT it depends on the film. Some can be really hard to remove.
It would be worth talking to Scott from Totally Dynamics. 08000469973

At the 2013 New York Auto Show, BMW is displaying an unique E92 M3 model. According to BMW of North America, the official paint name is Frozen Red, but the base color is Sakhir Orange, the very same paint introduced by the new M6 Coupe.

Ask the opinion of some professional wrappers. You'll want it to be removed properly too.

Aftermarket wraps are obviously easily removable, not sure what BMW would use though. The Focus RS500 wrap is just 3M Matte Black so maybe BMW used something similar.

Why would you buy a limited edition matt car and pay a higher premium for it to peel the matt wrap so it now looks run of the mill and is no longer limited edition?

Both are good points. But its not a base coat without laquer. It is a matt clear coat that is used but still i see what you are saying.

On a flip side, I wish I can find a place that will do a matt wrap for my car.
Most places don't seem to to do clear matt in the uK??

Because I cannot stand frozen/matt paintwork, it's my money, and I don't care if it "de-values" it.

I know it is wrap. My comment was in reply to someone saying that on the matt painted cars they do not use clear coat.

So instead of buying and de wrapping frozen edition why do you not just buy a normal non frozen edition in red and save lots of money. I do not understand what you're method is.

What lies beneath? Japan Red with a normal topcoat? That is what I would be more worried about before taking it off.

Been searching daily for over two years for the spec I want, Red, Competition Pack, Black leather, Carbon Trim, and only two have come up on AUC website, and they had not had their Running In service done, so non-starters.

A "M Performance Edition" matches my spec, except for the Frozen finish, so as a few have been for sale lately, I decided that "un-wrapping" one could be the best solution, hence my original question.

I have seen one that had been done in the past, sold in Newcastle, but the dealer said that a previous owner had had it done, and could/would not put me in touch with him, so do not know whether it was a simple unwrap and detail, or a re-spray, hence my original question.

The money saved buying a non limited edition you could retrofit the spec you want and still be in pocket. Running in services are not allot either so you could always pay to get that done.

As for the de wrap try calling a professional. Totally dynamics, or surrey project.

I met Scott from Totally Dynamics on Friday. He has re-wrapped the Frozen edition red. No problem to remove it and a fully painted surface underneath with the same colour.

Thanks for making the effort and info , did he mention if there were any marks from the wrap being applied by BMW ??

Best to give him a call and talk it through.

http://www.totally-dynamic.co.uk/cen...c-north-london

I was there to get part of my car re-wrapped. The wrap comes off really easily and leaves no marks whatsoever. The paintwork remains pristine, which is why I like a wrap. My car is black and keeping it pristine is just too much hard work. Look at it the wrong way and a swirl mark appears.

The only potential nightmare with getting a wrap done is scratches caused by the scalpel knifes they use to cut the wrap. That won't be an issue if the wrap was done by BMW or a professional like Scott, but if you get it done on the cheap by a cowboy it is a real risk.
