I think Accesstuner Race was always free. It is definitely used but only by those who really know what they are doing.

^This. ATR has been available since mid 2012, and has always been free. Perhaps you were thinking of ATP?

I wouldn't touch my car with a 10 foot pole knowing what I know as far as tuning is concerned. I leave it up to the professionals.

There are certainly plenty of places to read up on ATR and how you can use it. There are many that take the E30 maps and modify them for like E40-50 as well by changing things. This, obviously, is something that you do at your own risk. Downloading ATR and looking around won't hurt, but be aware you will need to have a general idea of how things work before you start playing with and changing things in the tuning.

Also with people like the ProtuningFreaks folks you can get a protune from them for a fairly low price and they do know what they are doing already and have numerous people that will tell you how happy they are with their services. All depends on if you want to spend the time and effort doing your own research and tuning or just use what resources are already available to you.

I encourage people to download ATR, read the help file and take a look around. The more people understand why/how the car does what it does the better they will be able to track down or correct any issues they may be seeing in their logs.
