Poll: Supercharger Upgrade for 328s?
I have been looking for a way to add real power to my cherished e91. (since BMWNA does not want to bring e91s 335xi to the US).
Folks familiar with this board will recall several attempts from 328 owners/members to reflash the ECU, etc. Gains have been limited, if any. Here is another potential option worth exploring: Just got off the phone with Paul at vf-engineering. http://www.vf-engineering.com/ They are making EDIT [a supercharger] for e46 328 and would consider making them for e9x 328s if there was enough demand. They seem a reputable company catering to the BMW, Porsche and VW crowd. This may be pricey, but they bring the e46 to more than 300HP... If you have a 328 and may be interested this mod, please answer this poll and drop me a PM. EDIT 6/30: Clarification from vf: We are talking about a "supercharger" (as mentioned in the web site), not a "turbo". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercharger "A supercharger can be powered mechanically by a belt, gear, shaft, or chain connected to the engine's crankshaft. It can also be powered by an exhaust gas turbine. A turbine-driven supercharger is known as a turbosupercharger or turbocharger. The term supercharging refers to any pump that forces air into an engine". I learned something today. FM PS: to the 335 crowd, I know your car is better, faster, etc. etc. stay

I'm interested to see if any company would waste the money to do something this stupid.

I can see why this might be exciting for those of you with e91's, but it's going to take quite a bit of consumer base for them to do this, which unfortunately I don't think exists.
All the manufacturers that I know of have dumped the idea once the 335 was released. |

It depends on the price. Quality product less than $500...maybe but for the marginal price difference may as well just get the 335.
The chips for the 335's however...that puts you in M territory at a few grand....that's worth it if you can't swing the $60+K. |

I will wait until my neighbor picks up an S4, then I'll pick up the 335. I can still smoke his A4 with mods with my 328. Until then, I don't see the need to spend the $$ on an unproven turbo.

the problem is that any kind of quality kit with proper fuel management will cost more than trading in your car for a 335i (which will have a factory warranty). And a factory designed turbo system will almost always be more reliable than an add-on kit, and have better driveablilty.

A super charger might be profitable enough to make sense for a company to produce, although I wouldn't bet on it.

Well I do agree that the appeal of buying a 328i is for its naturally aspired NA engine, handling and better gas mileage over the 335i. So making a turbo kit for the 328i might be redundant esp since the 335i turbo charged engine is alrdy made very well, (fuel pump issues aside). Even if made well, the turbo kit will only match the performance of the 335i, and you'll have no warranty(even factory made 335is turbos have known issues of breaking down, and going into limp mode).
that aside, it'll be interesting to see if this does become a reality. How profitable it'll be for the company however, would depend on the quality of the turbos, and if they are willing to stand behind their product. Maybe, they have superchargers for the e92 M3 alrdy. Might be easier to produce

Agreed. but if they are making a E46 turbo kit alrdy, they might as well broaden their market. No harm in that, as opposed to making a turbo kit just for the 328i.
