one of my mate's a senior bmw tech so no labor costs for stuff like that and parts are cheap. there's a group buy for the car alarm. i think that's worth doing. my car came with a tracker so it's worth activating. i'm not really going to do the tint (god forbid if you're in an accident and they're trying to get you out of the car, trying to smash in the window might be more tricky). and yes i was being a little sarcastic about the second tracker... my car's caked in CF, looks great but does say "steal me" so i might be a little more cautious....

don't think the thieves will damage the car....doubt they'll figure out what's happened....their module will just switch off and not power up again....they'll be too concerned about staying in the car too long and will likely then get out. now activating and ejector seat or tear gas inside the cabin when the false obd is plugged into....that could be interesting......or maybe just some canned fart gas...

Wire the obd into the stereo so when they plug in to their dummy obd (as you've relocated the real one) the stereo activates.
Make sure to always put stereo full volume before you go sleep Play song "Lowdown, Dirty Thief" by Bone Orchard Revival at full volume. Sorted

I remember in my early mod days there was an alarm system that I really wanted for my Honda, it would fill the cabin with some sort of thick smoke that would serve only to stop the thief from driving off with the car and draw attention to a 'burning car'; without any repercussions to the interior. I think it was designed for anti-hijacking.

Good car alarms used to have an internal siren as well that would almost make your ears bleed, a thief would certainly get out sharpish if it went off, but Im guessing we now have to be carefull not to hurt the scumbags

are they actually able to sit in the car without the alarm going off ?
I thought the doors would have deadlocks as well ?

Sorry for bringing back this thread but my eyebrows now seem to be permanently raised after reading on the issue regarding theft by cracked obd port.
After doing a little research, I found on watchdog's site that bmw have acknowledged the problem and taken steps to address it. Therefore, I would like to know if its ok for me to sleep soundly tonight as I haven't taken any security measures yet (only had the car for 12days). Is this still a problem?

If you take the key out of the back of the fob and put it in the door lock. Rotate it (I can't remember which way) and hold. If the windows drop then you need the update from bmw. If they don't then its as secure as bmw can make it.

Disclock will be considered but only as a last resort. Actually on second thoughts, I'd rather get a viper alarm than a disclock.

Thanks. Haven't even made any mods to it yet but hopefully will give it a make-over soon.

After doing some more research, it's still not clear if this issue is resolved as some people still reported their cars stolen. Is the OBD port still a security risk?
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I just did the key test and it appears I may have had the update. But I'm still not convinced.

Disklok - £40 second hand on eBay / gumtree
I bought one and I sleep much better now. That plus relocate your obd port should be enough to deter the scumbags ... Viper alarm would be great if you have the spare cash.. |
