Exhaust opinions and options!
What's up guys, I'm unbelievably torn between three choices of exhausts.
I'm looking into Vanguard, the Remus Race and the BMW PE, I just don't know which one to get! I heard the PE in person and it sounds great, I only heard videos of the other ones so I'm not sure. Let me know what u guys think! |

Will you be doing any mods other then the exhaust? keep in mind Catless DP's are a must and they will make the exhaust sound completely different, so id say buy the DP's and get a noticeable performance gain as well as a different sound, and if you still don't like it, go from there!

BMW PE + Catless DP
Probably the most refined sound on the N55. It's a classic.

I work for a BMW dealership.. I like the PE but its certainly not "refined" sounding... it's the most raspy/higher pitched out of all the ones mentioned. Sounds cool, but not as refined sounding as the Vanguard.
That being said, I have a Vanguard. It has a super deep smooth bass-y sound with stock downpipe, in fact I thought it was rather quiet. With a catless donpipe it's PURE SEX. Gurgles and pops (but in a bass-y way, not tinny sounding like the PE), backfires on WOT shifts (especially with E85 in the tank), and generally sounds super exotic. However... fully catless, it does drone a bit between 1700-2000 rpm in 6th gear. I've changed the way I drive to avoid this. Basically I stay in 4th gear at speeds below 45mph, and 5th gear in speeds up to 60mph. I use 6th for highway speeds and that keeps the RPM over 2k and no drone. I've lost about 0.5-1.0mpg (if that's even a measurable amount - it's cold out), but I'd *NEVER* give up the sound because of it. As for install... if you have a lift and some patience, it's not a big deal. I spent about 1-1.5 hours aligning the tips by bending the muffler hangers and messing with the cross brace between the mufflers and finally by placing the adustable tips. At least there are adjustments to be made - you can make it absolutely perfect if you want. Some setups you have to live with "pretty close." |

Thanks for the help guys, I actually pulled the trigger on a Vanguard and a BMS intake yesterday and it will all be going in next week along with a JB4. I'm stoked for all of it to come together!

Just got my BMW PE installed and love it! It pops, gurgles and is not annoyingly loud. It's more subtle than most exhausts. If you're looking for in your face loud, then this is not for you. All in all, happy with my purchase.
FYI: the right tip is known to be "off" in terms of look. It tends to point down compared to left tip so they look incongruent. The mechanic had to wrestle around with it but he finally got it straight. He said that the more he tightened the clamps, the more the right tip would point down. Another option is to get the whole thing welded on. |

Personally I have had lots of loud exhausts and still have one on my S2k, for daily duties I went with something alot quieter and actually makes power on our cars. Akrapovic SS full evo exhaust system. It is quiet but zero drone and with the Cobb tune it has woken up a bit.

My brother has a HPF (V2) system on his 335i. In my opinion, sounds great and has the perfect volume (I prefer louder exhausts). It's pretty damn loud on cold start and does drone quite a bit in 6th gear between 1500-2500rpm, but it's still the exhaust I would choose if I had a 335i. The fit and finish was amazing as well and all the welds looked great. I personally think all the other cat-backs are pretty mellow in terms of volume; the HPF isn't as a refined sound as others but I like it. With a catless downpipe however, the drone might be unbearable and other systems might be preferable.
