Since it is all handled by the Juice Box (JB), that is what allows you to adjust on the fly. It just tells the Juice Box, "Hey, start compensating and adjusting for this type of performance now, please."

The Cobb AP on the other hand, and almost any flash tune for that matter, actually goes into the ECU and tells the ECU, "Hey, I need you to perform at these levels, so adjust and compensate accordingly." Since you are dealing directly with the ECU the car has to be in certain modes to accept new instructions.

Sorry, didn't want to make that too long of an answer but I really like to know the why of things so here's to hoping it helps others out.

EDIT: If anyone sees/feels that I didn't word something incorrectly, please feel free to expand on/correct it. I am by no means a pro tech/tuner.
Well thank you for taking the time to write this and expand on my question. You can never have enough knowledge on these forums. Appreciate it.

On my iPhone trying to install the tune. I'm downloading my ecu memory. Is that what I need to send to Cobb? And does anyone have the email address to send it to?

Are you able to install it? If so, there is no need to send it to Cobb. However, if your ROM isn't supported, you need to use the ROM submission form on their website. Download the AP Manager to your comp and pull the ECU file. That is what you send them.

Thanks for the response!

I had an accessport on my mazdaspeed6 a few years ago... But when I tried to load it on the 335xi but i had unrecognized rom, so i saved the ecu data. I then installed the cobb software on my mac so i could download the data from the accessport, to find out there is a firmware update available.. I updated the firmware and went back to the car and worked like a CHARM (as expected). I only loaded stage 1 on the car (its my chicks car) and I am thoroughly impressed! The actual flashing seemed slightly sketchy as my dashboard lit up like a christmas tree with lights (4x4 malfunction, the one that looks like the cars on a lift to name a few), thankfully once the flashing was done it all went away, and from my searching some n54 guys have had similiar issues, but they all said not to worry...

I don't know if this issue is inherent to all n55's or just the xi's but the oem mapping has a annoyingly touchy gas pedal, it acts more like an on/off switch, it makes driving the car normal a chore... anyway, the stage 1 map has corrected this issue, and makes the throttle tip in much more pleasant.

Powerwise, the car feels much stronger even if its not on stage 1 aggressive. My girl noticed the power and gas pedal feel immediately, I havent gotten to take it over 60-70ish mph yet.

Thanks Cobb! and fella's if you were on the fence about this tune its SO WORTH IT!

I called Cobb last week and told them that my car was delivered by the end of Dec 2011 and it's a 2012. Then I told them I would like to give it a try since there is a 30 days return policy. They said that's fine.

I got the AP today and hooked it to my pc to update the firmware then connected it to my car. And it worked! my ECU was supported, I have it on Stg1 aggressive.

Great for you!

@Cobb: Can you guys confirm this for all 2012 cars?

Which would be less detectable by dealers - JB4 of Cobb AP? Assuming both were taken off the car for dealer visits?

I like the Cobb, but the JB4 seems to have it beat for features.

Cobb (experience on n54 with my 335 and now 1m) is much smoother than piggybacks and is a superior and safer form of tuning.

The in dash gauge features are gimmicky IMO. Get a p3 guage if you really want real time data.

Uninstalled cobb is not detectable.

So if I have Cobb and and a FBO car will I get the service engine light soon because of the downpipe? This is what's stopping me from getting Cobb.

I received mine but cannot get past the stage where the ap downloads the stock ecu. It will say it can't connect to the car every time after it tries to compile the flash to upload. Any ideas?

Your ROM may not be supported...follow the directions on the website on how to "dump" your ROM and send it to COBB...

Make sure the car is in the ON position but engine off. Two press on the start button with foot off the brake / clutch.

Does the ap reset this after it downloads the ecu? It wouldn't start the ecu download unless it was in the ON position
