noob. Order vs Buy off lot

First hello all. Been looking around for a while, now finally posting. So here is the question and I did search but I didn't seem get the the answers I was looking for. Anyway I see most people order their cars, is this just so you can have exactly what you want or for ED? I have been looking at dealerships around me, in the market for a 335xi coupe, they are readily available at most dealers pretty much configured how I would like, Premium package, Sport package, 18's, navi or no doesn't matter to me and heated seats.

So would you think a better deal could be had for one of these cars sitting on a dealers lot? I'm in no rush as I want the snow to melt before getting one anyway. So I guess I could just order.

You know after reading all this it isn't much of a question. So ahhh...just sayhing HI I guess.

If in no rush then order one exactly the way u want it, cars that's on dealer lot could be sitting there withering the elements and birdshit and such...and likely it was test driven without proper warm up procedure...the wait is not long, esp. if u live in MA...a month and 2 weeks at most to get ur car

Nowadays, as far as I know, no reason. Back in beginning of last year though I HAD to order mine. They simply did not have any 6MT E92 Coupes on any lots because they were selling so fast. I called many dealerships and no one even had a demo for me to test drive so I had to test drive a 6MT Sedan and a 6AT Coupe to get an idea. If they've got what you want on the lot go for it, you may even have more leverage to get a better deal since they're paying for everyday it sits on the lot. Plus when you order, the wait is almost worse then being waterboarded!

I wanted stock E90, with 6MT in Silver. No dealer in so-cal had one in stock so I had to order. When I got the car there was about 5 miles on the odo.
It was a painful wait, though it did give me a lot of time to rethink purchase method. I was initially going to buy w/o financing and ended up leasing. I may be wrong but I think the fact that the car was not a typical dealer lot config and that it was on a 10 week order meant that I had a bit more leverage when negotiating the lease. I ended up with no markup on the MF or on the fees.

ED also works well for leasing too. Residual value is a % of US MSRP even though you paid the discounted ED price.

It's really up to you. Depending on how motivated the dealer is, you may be able to get a better deal buying a car off the lot than ordering, but that really varies. The only reason to order is if you can't get what you want by buying off the lot, or you want to do ED or PCD. I highly recommend ED, but the choice is really up to you!

I ordered for 3 reasons: 1) They didn't have any 08's on the lot, and I wanted an 08 since the 07s would have been automatically depreciated; 2) I wanted to get a car that had all the options I wanted and none of the option I didn't want, especially since I plan on keeping my car for a while; 3) I wasn't in a hurry to get a car.

If you're not in a hurry, I say just order one...y not? There are no drawbacks

Order one...the waiting and the tracking are rites of passage for many here Makes the bond stronger

Aside from ED (as suggested) look at opting for the Performance Center Delivery.

I would take one off the lot. You'll get a far better deal and with current concerns about the economy many dealers will be more anxious and keen to clear inventory than usual.

If would just order it and get exactly what I want. The worst thing you can do is just to buy one off the lot and then later regret it. Then it's really going to cost you a lot more if you want to switch to another car.

ED is the only way to go; Picked mine up on June 5 and spent a great eight days in Austria and Germany.
Your missing the boat if you do not take advantage of ED.

this is what i'm thinking!

my wife really wanted to go to a trip to europe next year to see all her relatives (she's Italian). I plan to stay a total of 2 weeks in Europe, with part of it in Germany to see coworkers who returned there, and to see her family in Northern Italy.

A question for you ED guys. Since you have MSRP from US, and an MSRP from ED, are you able to bargain down the ED prices as much as the US price? Can I take the US Invoice, and subtract the MSRP differences to get a ED invoice? I just want to avoid the possibility of getting a deal on ED close to its MSRP, when I could have bargained down a US delivery for the same price.

I haven't done ED but am considering it. I believe what you do is look at the "confidential dealer pricing" sticky post in the relevant model forum and get the ED invoice price. You then offer the dealer $X over the invoice price. $1K seeming to be the generally accepted dealer profit. I believe you can also bargain for options at invoice price.

I'm sure others would have more experience in this area, I suggest you post on the ED board.

When pricing out a car for ED, everything is priced at invoice (options, etc.) and then you'd just add $xxxx over invoice for the car.

While I agree the ED would be very cool I have spent quite a bit of time in Europe and while I am sure the whole experience would kick ass I'm really not looking for a vacation right now. I did see and drive a Deep Green Metallic with Saddle brown leather today. Great color combo. Was able to take it for a good hour test drive (was a dealer demo so they didn't care about me putting miles on it). I may look into ordering or the PCD option though, have not heard too much about that. The hunt continues......I just wish winter would hurry up and get the hell out of here.
