NYS guys with Cobb + catless downpipes - Question

I really want to replace my downpipe but I'm concerned with the NYS emissions test. Basically you're allowed one OBDII monitor in the "not ready" state and as long as you have no emissions codes you pass. Not too worried about the visual, that can easily be overlooked.

From my understanding, when you tick the box in the Cobb ATR software under advanced engine parameters to "ignore" DTC P375C it basically tells the car to ignore the code. I think (almost positive) it works differently from the piggy back tunes that simply clear the code whenever it appears. I was told by Cobb that all other codes will show up and only the ones you choose to ignore will not be displayed. Which is of course what you would want.. its good to know when there's a real problem.

Sooo.. my question that they couldn't answer probably due to legal reasons, will my OBDII monitors show ready such that I can pass emissions? I passed this spring with my stg 1 aggressive tune installed but that doesn't by default have the P375C code disabled, so it wouldn't have any effect on readiness. At worst I think my rear o2 sensor would show not ready but you're allowed 1 monitor in the not ready state.. Thoughts?

Aren't there 2 monitors related to the cat? The actual cat and then the O2. So if the Cobb "ignores" the catalyst monitor, it would still show up as not ready? It wouldn't throw the code, but the testing equipment should be looking for that monitor?

just get a DP fix (O2 sim) with your catless downpipes. they can be found for cheap and will guarantee that you pass.

Well, there's the front and rear o2 sensors I'm guessing one monitor for each. The code is only related to issues with the rear o2 readings so I think the other monitor should be unaffected. Having the system "ignore" the code may not even cause the 1 monitor to be not ready, I think the Cobb is just telling it not to throw a code regardless of the reading. (voltage) Where as a car with a stock cat might show 2volts when everything is working properly, and a car without a cat reads 4 volts, I'm thinking the tune makes it so anywhere between 0 and 5 volts is within the acceptable range, rather than some small specific calculated range based on the front o2's reading.

The normal fixes don't work for the N55 unfortunately. The one device which looks promising is this - http://www.o2simulator.com/smart-o2-...tor-p-185.html

Which takes the reading from the front o2 sensor and outputs a calculated voltage to the vehicle side of the rear o2 sensor. Nobody seems to have tested it for the N55 but they did have an install guide for a 2013 M6 which uses the same wideband o2 sensors, just 4 instead of 2. I don't see why it would work any differently.

There has to be a way around it.. I'm sure it's just looking for a specific voltage range based on the air flow on the front o2 sensor. What I'd like to do is set the parameter in ATR to ignore that o2 code before I even install the downpipe and have a shop check my readiness after clearing the codes and doing a full drive cycle. Since at that point it won't matter what the actual reading is, the OBDII monitors should read whatever they will with or without the downpipe.

you should invest in tool that checks obd-readiness that what the local inspection station test for other than the basic stuff.

Good find! I already have a OBDII bluetooth adapter I use with the BMWhat app, just downloaded it for my android phone. I'm going to turn off the catless code, and re-install my map and we'll see what happens.

Slow day at work .. So I re-flashed my car with the "downpipe" code suppressed and I took a little drive. Out of the related monitors, catalyst is actually showing "ready" evap system is not ready, oxygen sensor is not ready and oxygen sensor heater is not ready. I think thats a really good sign, evap should be of no concern and I don't expect the o2 heater circuit to be a problem. At worst the "oxygen sensor" readiness monitor will be an issue but you're allowed 1 "not ready" I'm going to keep checking to see what the monitors are show after some more driving.. I've been customizing an e50 tune and tweaking it almost daily so it's clearing my DTCs / readiness but I'll hold off on any changes for a few days. I think it's just about done anyway.

So far so good.. the o2 heater went to a ready status on my way home. I'm pretty confident EVAP should be fine, I don't know of any relation that could have with a catalyst code, it's a totally different system. I think I might be good to go.

Formula for Success

Uninstall COBB tune + o2 Sim = Drive Around and check with BavTech for emissions readiness

Worked for me, will do it the same way going foward

What o2 sim are you using? Most guys haven't had any luck with them on the n55 but I have a feeling the one I posted above will work, if it works on a 2013 M6 I don't see why it wouldn't work on an N55. I passed just fine with stg 1 aggressive, doesn't affect readiness. I'm going to check again to see if any more monitors went ready since I've done a little more driving.

I have an N54, so I had the BMS o2 sim. No idea what to do with the N55 or other platforms, maybe o2 spacers or micro cats.
