Moving from US to Europe
I have a 2011 335d (US Spec) and will be moving to Europe before the end of 2013. I plan to take the car with me - it has only 20.000km.
After some reasearch, found a carrier to transport it and got all information necessary related to documentation and etc. however there is one key aspect that remains a big 'black box' as I got nothing with BMW USA, got no answer from BMW AG and found nothing on line: What are the modifications I need to perform on the car to get it registered in Europe? - I know that rear signal lights must be orange/amber (US spec are red) - what else is required? - will the FM/AM radio work in Europe? - What about emissions? I know diesel requirements in US are more tight than Europe but.... - does anybody know a company that can give me a list based on year of the car? The ride is completely stock with no modifications. What I do not want is get the Car in Europe and find I will need EUR 10k to make it compliant to UE! Thanks

you can get a set of Hella tails for right around 180 euro. Also, you will need to have your rear fog light switch working too.
you will need to go through TUV inspection to get the thumbs up to be certified, my neighbor did her Honda Odyssey a couple years back and she said it cost her right around $1600 to get approved and everything converted over to meet Euro specs. As far as radio, you will get some stations; however, just hook up a coding cable and switch it over to EUR - that is all it takes. If you don't have iDrive, there is a way to switch over just by holding down a couple buttons, I did it with my wife's car. IDrive requires a coding cable though. |

Kiss that sat radio goodbye, no such animal here.
I don't think emissions will be an issue here, as long as you are stock. Biggest issue will be the lights but you already know what needs done for that. |

If you bring it as personal moving goods you may be able to get away with keeping your US spec taillights. In Sweden the condition for importing it as moving goods is that you have owned the car for at least six months and that you have lived abroad for a minimum of one year. This also makes the car exempt for any import duties/taxes.
Caveat: The above may only apply if you are a returning EU citizen so you may want to look into that. How are you shipping it? Container or RoRo? I may bring my 335 back to Sweden at some point so interested to know how it all works out. |

Depending on your status your going to have to make out a check to the Zoll man. There will be an import tax unless you have a valid exemption. Most expats here who are not covered under the NATO SOFA buy cars locally.
Your going to have to have the side markers coded off too. These guys are awesome and speak better English than I do. http://www.car-coding.de/

The regulations depend on what country you move in. EU gives big lines to rules but every country have their own taxes, car inspections etc. So where you are moving?
About fm/am, if you have put the radio to fm, it will work. My car has am also here in Europe so it should work in US. |

Prices are 35% higher than in US too. Our M57 is now the N57 (few upgrades) and the spicier versions of it are on X5 and 7 series as 40d (313hp) and 50d 381hp). 3 series has the detuned version as 30d.
