MI people - How do you guys do it...
I am going to be moving from South NJ/Philadelphia to MI area sometime in the summer - I am no stranger to potholes and bad roads but I visited the Troy/Auburn Hills/Rochester area this weekend and was surprised by how much worse they were then the roads here even. Our rented Malibu with 16 inch rims and thick side walled tires was having a hard time and you could definitely feel it...
I am planning on bringing my lowered E90 on 19" rims and thin tires to MI and driving it at least until late November and then by a Wrangler or something. I think this may be a recipe for disaster considering the crappy roads and highways especially I-75, but how do you guys with BMWs cope with these roads? Should I sell my suspension/wheels and move to a less aggressive setup? Other then that, I was all around very happy with the area and can't wait to move.

Michigan roads are in horrible condition now and much worse than they have ever been. Everyone knows they need to be fixed after this brutal winter. The question is how long will it take our inept politicians to actually get it done. In the meantime we are all at risk for serious damage every time we drive our cars.
BTW... Welcome to Michigan!

my suggestion is to learn to read the road even further ahead than usual. and actually avoid the potholes (haha, duh). if you have quality 19s, you'll be ok. don't be driving a half inch off the ground either.
you're moving here as i'm moving out. you'll enjoy the summers here.

LOL! couldn't resist F*ck'd up my wheel (D-force LTW5) heading up to Grand Rapids last month and had to pay for another alignment. Way too many pot holes to avoid them all. The probability that you will hit a pothole is 100%. Hope you have non-RFTs and forged wheels b/c your Alufelgen's will snap in half. GL!

In my daily commute I have all the bad potholes memorized and I try to make sure to leave enough room between myself and the car in front of me so I see any new potholes before it's too late. Some roads I completely avoid because they are too bad in sections regardless of the added travel time. When driving on the highway or in areas that I don't frequent often I just try to look farther ahead and I watch for other cars to swerve or hit one.

I'm already thinking of that i75 entrance to south on University drive in Rochester.. it's like a dirt road there.

I consider myself a professional pothole avoider too especially in the roads here in Philly, but I see myself having a very very hard time up there. Quote:

That was the worst road I've ever driven on. It was like a friggin war zone...and this is supposed to be a well-off suburb?

Winter is not that bad because if it is snowy enough the potholes are somewhat filled in with ice and snow. I have had more damage done by the ice chunks that fall out of people's wheel wells, completely destroyed my last lip on one. Fortunately my e90 is an xi because it is my winter car.

Stay focused on the road, and leave some distance from the car in front of you, so you can be ready to swerve!

Yeah, you just came at a bad time. It is really the worst it's been in awhile.
You're right, public transit is pretty nonexistent. If you wanna get somewhere on time, you don't take the bus. Yeah, crazy thing is it's been like that for years. Don't know why they've never bothered to fix it. I go to Oakland University, so every time I go home, I have to wreck my car on that. My last car was on coils and I swear I would go over it at 5mph. |
