D3 and 320d engine differences

I read somewhere, once, about the turbo being different, some kind of hybrid jobbie with (I think) the compressor off a 330d turbo.

So, is it just the turbo that's different on the engines?

I seem to remember something like it having the injectors from the 535d (before the 335d was available) as well.

Think they kept the changes down to basics, rather than do the normal internals job that Alpina do, to keep costs down.

Believe the turbo was the most obvious change, but don't know any more. Check out http://www.thealpinaregister.com

You thinking of buying? D3 is a nice bit of kit.

From the alpinaregister site (thanks bumps):

Quote:
The D3 engine starts life as the 2.0-litre four cylinder turbocharged diesel that you find in a normal 320d. ALPINA use a combination of other BMW model parts plus some of their own grown technology to breathe more life into the engine.

From the 330d they use the exhaust half of its turbo. This is bigger and therefore can accommodate more airflow. They also use the 330d’s intercooler to accommodate the new engines thirst for cold air.

From the 535d they use its injectors.

Finally, the inlet half of the turbo is a patented ALPINA/Garrett/ Honeywell unit.

The goal of these changes was simple: to double the throughput of fuel that can be delivered per millisecond. Effectively this allows the car to rev higher and thus give a much more exploitable engine. If you drive the 320d you will find that the power tops out between 3,800 – 4,000 rpm; in the D3 this is extended to between 4,500 – 4,600rpm on to its redline at 5,000rpm.

On the exhaust side of things they've also added a diesel particulate filter... not that that's anything to do with the engine..!

No, not thinking about getting a D3, but they are very nice though. That Alpina style front looks dated in pictures, but when you see one in the flesh it "works". Zorst is nice too. Oh, and the wheels and interior...

Actually, when I was choosing mine I didn't know there was a D3 Touring available, from memory they are slightly cheaper than the 320D M-Sport? So I might've just managed one

I saw a D5 near Newark last night (with a very special number plate), and it prompted me to ask the question.

Obviously the other difference would be the ECU code.

Actually, I've just always wondered if there was a nice stealth upgrade to the 320D, I bet the turbo looks very similar externally

I don't know if the D3 is remappable, and what it remaps to? I think they're 200bhp stock, which you can hit with a remapped 320d so it would be an expensive way to get 200bhp, although the stock 320D's 4,500rpm "who turned off the engine" limit can be a bit frustrating...

Hmmm, a man that I know, that knows a man, that knows a man that sells garrett turbos says that the 320d and 330d are dropping turbos like mad, one of their highest selling replacement units. While they work closely with Garrett, he doesn't think they'd release details on the compressor, as it's probably made for Alpina.

He does think that they could create a similar hybrid, 320D (GT17, apparently) hot side with a 330D (GT22 or GT25) turbine, and some other Garrett Compressor. You'd be looking at £1,000+VAT (Obviously plus injectors and remap)

Looking on the alpinaregister, DMS are mapping the D3 to 230-240. Mu-hahaha

Interestingly, if the bolt pattern on these turbos is the stock GT series bolt pattern, there's a whole world of big huge turbos you could fit, if only you could get maps.

High mileage turbos yes, and i believe its many more 320d and 330d!!

i blame it on the extended service intervals, turbos need fresher oil, more often

im a forum member on the alpina register, i cancelled my order for a d3 and got my 335d instaed......dms have not remapped any d3s, they said it might be possible but they would need a customers car for a week to develop it, and the uptake would be low (only 200ish in the UK) and if they could the powerband would be unusable as at the mo below 2000rpm in the d3 is dead its good between 2000-3300 and after that its shit again/.

That's interesting. Thanks Steve - am a big Alpina fan and would consider one of their cars next. As the D3 is currently the only option price wise for me this may change things (wait for a B3 Bi Turbo!!)

I did wonder, I couldn't find any info on a D5, and to be honest it was a slightly provocative post, so someone could tell me there wasn't

This "D5" Saloon I saw, in Kelham (Newark) had an Alpina front, and (apparently) Alpina wheels* and was in that Blue colour... The number plate was D5 ALP. Who knows what it was then, someone's attempt at a "study" perhaps.

I say apparently - they were big but the car was moving.

I saw your posts on thealpinaregister, and assumed when you'd spoken to DMS that they'd done one.

2 - nil

Stick with a remap, then.

Yep, my boy is too busy walking at the moment (it's still relatively new to him) but he's showing much more interest in the Baby Racer II as each day passes, and it is just so cool, even my wife agrees. My mum says I'm setting him up to be like me (car mad and continually chucking money away on them). I said "And your point is?"

B3 - AAAAARRRGGGHHHHHH!! I'm so bloody jealous!!! What is it - saloon, coupe or what? Either way - extremely nice. Dare I say it if I had the cash, I would rather have one than an M3 - far more exclusive and IMHO much more real-world usable. I just like Alpina and what they stand for, not that I dislike M Cars, but you know what I mean I'm sure. Plenty of pics please when it arrives.
