335i High Pressure Fuel Pump dead :(
G/f called me today to say the car was juddering and difficult to start, not good news as our other car broke (and subsequently got scrapped) last week
Phoned up John Clarks in Aberdeen to find out what to do and they advised to phone BMW Assistance and if we didn't get anywhere call them back. Guy came out within half an hour and diagnosed a faulty high pressure fuel pump Really impressed with JC's service today and getting a call back to ask how we were getting on, then booking the car in for the work tomorrow. Big thumbs up Car is an 08 that has just turned 12.5k miles, hopefully this will be the only problem I get.... the interesting bit was they told me my car wasn't part of the recall campaign so the problem must be more widespread than thought!! |

I had this same problem last October, the dealer as part of the warranty finished replacing two of the three fuel pumps, so far no recurring problem. The fault was down to contaminates in the fuel, the pumps keep blowing the fuse. The dealer do not know if it was due to bad fuel or evaporated fuel which had created sediment since the manufacture date and the date of import in to the UK Build May, delivery Sept. Was told that BMW/Alpina do not put much fuel in before arriving at the dealership.
Sounds to me that in your case it was sediment in the fuel. Had you nearly empted the fuel tank before refueling or do you refill when its a quarter still full? Last edited by Estoril Sport; 05-10-2010 at 04:28 PM.. |

Mine went out in February (27.000 km). Hope the new version (ending in 943) will last longer. If you're out of warranty (or tuned...) it costs around 600 EUR to replace it. Alpina_B3_Lux

I've noticed my cars starting to take an extra 2 -3 cranks before firing up, it's only from cold, but it used to be on the button. I'm wanting for a call back from the dealer.

I doubt it's carbon with 9500 miles on the clock, I'd have though coil packs would have shown up under load, the dealer said they want it in to check the low pressure side of the pump and go from there. Just waiting for a date when a loan car is available. |

Oh Contraire Blackadder.
If you have one of the affected engines they start to clog up from day one. There is at least one forum member on here who has had a total engine rebuild due to heavy carbonisation at only 7000 miles! Yves |

well. got mine back last friday after being at the stealers for a week. Took it across to cadwell on saturday towing the race bike on a trailer, performance seemd fine. Ran ok, took it easy so had over 30 to the gallon!
While it was in the stealers they replaced both turbos, 6 injectors and a fuel pump. Glad it was still under warranty!!!!!! |

Hypothetically, why would BMW replace injectors on a car which had suffered a 'minor' HPFP failure within 5000 miles? (ie HPFP had not failed, but was performing sub par). Is this because of carbonisation? |

Stay calm everyone, not all engines are affected at the end of the day, the trouble is the symptoms of a carbonised dying engine are exactly what everyone is describing, rough starts, HPFP failure, coil packs, gradual loss of performance etc etc. The ECU is so clever it masks the real problem by adjusting everything else to compensate. Too clever for its own good. BMW will change all the 'cheap' stuff first before considering a 10 grand engine rebuild! A good pointer if you are concerned is to drain a bit of oil out. If it smells burnt and looks more yacky than normal......get it tested by a lab, quick. The good news is that all this stuff can be fixed, thats what we have a warranty for at the end of the day. Cheers Yves |

My car has been taking a few cranks to start from cold for the last week ( only happens first thing in the morning) - car is now in the dealers getting checked out as i am travelling back to the UK in a few weeks to sell the car and would never sell a car to someone with a suspected problem.
That carbon build up problem is worrying to say the least. |

yahoo, symptoms were worryningly benign. Starting took a crank or two longer when cold, torbo rattle on the over run, about 4 times the power dropped into limp mode, yellow engine light came on. Stopped turned car off, waited 20 seconds and started up again with no light and normal power. Engine was running fine and i thought they try the usual software fix first but they went the full hit. I'm a bit miffed now though as thee is a rattle developed on my way home. Sounds like a rubber mount has dropped off (not refitted correctly) or a cover has come loose and is knocking as it seems to be road surface related not engine speed related. Going to ring up tomorrow and get it in again but it is now out of warranty by a few days. I can see a row brewing...
APart from that the car is brill, love it to bits. |

Update: Got a call from the dealers, they are replacing my HPFP. I had no codes or warning lights but they acknowledged that this is the early stages of the pump failing - car was broken in properly and only run on V Power Racing (100 oct here in Germany) car has done 10K and is totally standard.
