2009 328i - Radio intermittently does not power on at startup

I have a 2009 328i with Logic 7. I have 2k miles on my car.

Occassionally when I start the car, the radio does not turn on. All I see is the clock on the radio. Bluetooth does work as I can receive calls, but the radio does not work.

Has anyone seen this problem? It seems to be worse during colder weather.

I'm having the same problem since getting the car two weeks ago.

It has happened on three separate occasions. Twice I switched keys and it solved the problem, today when I tried the spare key it didn't make any difference.

Planning on calling the dealer in the morning.

I never thought about switching keys... I will try that next time. Let me know what your dealer says.

Switching keys has worked a few times, but not always.

One additional symptom I've noticed is there is no ignition chime when you start the car, so somehow that seems to be related to the radio issue.

I have an appointment on Friday. Hopefully they've received some sort of bulletin as how to resolve the problem.

It happened to me once when the valet parked my car. I have comfort access and had put the key into the keyhole, which I almost never do. When I got the car back the engine was running and the radio would not turn on. After stopping and starting the engine it was back to normal. Never was able to replicate or figure out what the problem was.

Do you remember if it was very cold outside that day?

Most times when it happened to me were first thing in the morning and the car was in the garage. Only on one occasion did it happen when the temperature was about 10 deg F.

Took the car to the dealer on Friday and as of COB they were not able to replicate the problem or find a cause. They are supposed to call me tomorrow (Monday).

No answers or solutions. Dealer was unable to replicate problem and it has not happened again since taking it in.

They did find something interesting to the data stored on the keyfob, so I would suggest you take your car in to your dealer if you have experienced this problem.

Anyone take their car into the dealer? And get this resolved?

Problem just happened to me again after 10 days without an issue.

It has not happened to me for over a month. And the weather has been relatively cold here in Houston lately. Several morning starts in the 30 degree range - radio came on fine. I have not had my iPod in my car lately though .. not sure if that made a difference.

Ok it happened again to me this morning. I think it is directly related to whether or not the iPod is connected.

iPod connected in center console. I started the car this morning, it ran for 10 seconds, I realized I forgot something, I stopped the car, went inside to get my forgotten item, came back, started the car, and bam.. no radio.. just a clock.. I opened the center console, unplugged the iPod, and turned the radio right on. Plugged the iPod back in and was good to go..

Sounds like a software update to the iPod integration / radio will probably fix this issue..

Temp this morning in Houston was around 50 degrees F.

I've had similar issues a couple of times on my new '09 E90 335i over the last month - and I don't have the iPod option and haven't connected it at all through the regular accessory port - but I do have the HD radio option - I've had a range of issues - twice the radio wouldn't turn on, and a couple of times I would get motorboating feedback instead of sound through the radio until I switched off the HD function - do you have HD or not? I wonder if it's tied somehow to that. Haven't had a chance to take it to the dealer yet but I'd bet they will send me packing with the usual "can't replicate your problem" response.

And it has been ice cold here in NYC so maybe temp does have something to do with it.

Well, my system totally failed. No audio, no chimes, BMW Assist dead, no VoiceAssist.

It's at the dealer now waiting on the part - MultiFrequency Control Unit, I think that's what the SA called it. Unfortunately the part is on backorder and being shipped from Germany.

Don't think it's temperature. It happened to me when it's been cold out, but it failed when the temps were around 60.

Just had a re-occurrence this weekend exactly like that - no audio, no phone, no chimes - totally frozen - did yours stay dead when you got to the dealer? How did they diagnose the issue? Mine worked again 5 hours later so it continues to be intermittent, so unless I drive right over to a dealer I think they will say "we can't reproduce your problem" and send me on my way.

Yes, it was totally dead when I got to dealer, so they were able to diagnose.

I think is becoming a well-known issue, hence the replacement part being on backorder. Seems they are starting to replace lots of units.

They have no idea how long it will take for the part to arrive. I'm just glad I have a loaner.

Did you have an HD radio? Wondering if it's tied to that.

No, I don't have an HD Radio.

I picked up my car from the dealer yesterday. They ended up replacing the MULF. Anyone what the MULF is?

Everything is working for now, time will tell.

It's baaack

Got in the car to run some errands and system was dead again.

Drove to post office, dropped off some mail, not even 5 minutes, got back in the car started up - everything fine.

This is getting frustrating.

Was this after you had that unit replaced?

Mine was fine for a while then happened again a couple of days ago - totally dead - I tried switching keys but that didn't work - then left it alone for an hour, got back in, and it worked. Extremely maddening. Haven't been to the dealer yet with it - please keep us updated with what you find out.

Yes, it was fine for 2 weeks after the MULF was replaced, happened out of the blue yesterday. Have an appointment to take the car in on Monday morning.

Do you have bluetooth? If so, what phone and service provider. My dealer said this may be BT issue.
