What do you guys think about this purchase?

Hey all,

So I decided right now I should be going for a 2006 330i since they are way cheaper and way more reliable. I'm thinking about going for this car I found at a used car dealer and wanted to see what you guys think about the price:

2006 330i 4dr sedan
Manual transmission
Mileage: 49524
Color: TiAg

Options:

NAVIGATION SYSTEM
*PREMIUM PACKAGE*
PREMIUM SOUND (not sure on this one I forgot to check if it's the HK one prolly not)
REAR AIR CONDITIONING/HEAT
*SPORTS PACKAGE*

They were asking $22,000 at the dealer, but they put it online for $21,000 and they gave me their final price of $20,800 after my dad offered $15,000 (lol) but I'm hoping we can convince them to go down to $20,000 or something. What do you guys think?

While I cannot comment on the car, it seems through my experience that I wouldn't expect too much wiggle on price. Dealers have to be turning over their inventory and it is usually 90 days - if the car doesn't sell they go to auction. They will let the car sit but after 60days (ish) they will start lowering the price (while maintaining a level of profit) and hoping someone bites.

My car was the same way - they reduced the online price by $1000 over what it was listed for at the dealer, and were able to come $500 off that, but realistically I wouldn't expect $1000s off. If they sell the car to you it'll be a definite loss and they'd rather take their chances at auction.

Have you checked autotrader or cars.com for cars that are very similar to this one to see how they are priced?

I think your dad is taking the right approach. They want to sell you that car as badly as you want to buy it. Now they're definitely not going to drop to $15,000 but I would be absolutely amazed if they were only willing to lower the price $200.

I'd say you should go back and offer 18-19, tell them you're serious about the car and want to take it home, but if they can't be more flexible on price you're walking.

I paid $17750 for my 06 330i no sport package or nav But 34k miles! I didn't think sport and nav was worth 4k though. Good luck though the 330i is a GREAT car! No HPFS or whatever problems

Actually just re read your post, that's a good price for all that plus 6MT.

Too bad you are not in Colorado. I'm selling my 330XI - premium, cold weather, sports and 6-MT. Lower miles than that 330i and it's still covered under the CPO. Maybe we can work something out like splitting the shipping???

No CPO. I think the previous owner purposely ditched it right before 50k.

Some dealers will not wiggle on price, if it does not sell they will send it back to the auctions. I've had dealers do this to me even If they were only going to make $100 in profit.

IIRC, it's been mentioned on the boards several times that auction values for '06 330s are now 15-16k. Add a little more if it's in what they call "above average" condition and more than typical options. But the dealer is realistically looking at, what, 17-18k at auction if he can't sell it?

Play the waiting game unless you're in a rush or absolutely in love with the car. The only downside is if someone less patient or less informed buys it first.

I have a 2006 330i and really like it. I don't think that's a horrible price for all that's on it, but you might be able to get them to come down a bit more.

Hmm, a local used car dealer gave 15k for my 06 330i on trade. It has iDrive, premium package, sport package, adaptive headlights, auto tranny with 70,000 mi. They are selling around Indianapolis for 22-23k. I doubt you will get it close to 15k but that is a bit regional of course. I managed to find mine when the dealer was closing its doors (I was the last sale of the last day) and all the cars were going out of state to auction. He let me have it for what he had in it....I got REAL lucky. You never know however. I see the OP stated that they are more reliable...than what? Are the newer models less reliable? I bought mine knowing it had a bad rear bearing. Fixed it and all seems well. I have heard that the 2006 325's have a GM build tranny that is not quite as reliable as my 300's.
