2007 - 2010 BMW 330i / 335i

#3 on the list of 10 used cars they say to avoid..

"proved so unreliable"

it was actually the cover of the article which grabbed my attention..

I guess power and enjoyment of the award winning N54 should be forgotten about and "avoided" because of the reliability concerns

Just thought I'd share this, pretty disappointing it sits on this list with other cars like the Chrysler Town and Country.. Jeep Grand Cherokee and the VW beetle

When I had my CPO 08 335xi E90 with 14k miles, I was in the shop more than I would of ever expected. I was on average in the shop 2-3 times a month, sometimes 2 times per week.

This was not just one problem, everything that could go bad went bad. HPFP, LPFP, All Seatbelt Tensioners, iDrive, Eroded Cats, Injectors, Both Adaptive headlamps, Both Tail lamps, cigarette port malfunction, the list goes on and on.

What sucked was the dealer was 45 minutes away.

I eventually got to my last straw and traded her in for a new 2011 335 which had very few problems. I had it for 1.25 years and I was only in the shop 3 times.

2007-2010 330i/335i?? The 330i was a 2006 MY production, and was discontinued for 2007.

exactly. shows how much they know.. I see they were trying to target the N54 but then took shots at the N52...

I have owned 4 of the 10! Didnt have any major problems with any of them. Some were kept longer that others so maybe I missed future issues.

When I was in the market for BMW 3 series last year, I really wanted a 335i. I made some research & decided to just settle with 328i because of the 335i HPFP issue. Sorry for the 335i owners who have to deal with this kind of inconveniences. I wish BMW went into another direction instead of just keeping to make it work.

I can understand this for the N54...

But the N52 really is pretty industructable...

I wanted a 335 so bad because of the power but got an 06 330i instead just because I was scared of any costs I would be hit with if the turbos went south

If you have any fear of costs, get an extended warranty.

Regarding reliability, there have been problems, but they've been addressed with extended warranties and/or recalls..

Still love mine, but also extremely glad I have the extended warranty to 100k. Also, sounding like a broken record, in California at least, turbos are part of the emissions system and thus covered past 50k to 70k.

Is there any N54 engine labelled as 330i on any international market ? I thought the N53 may be labelled 330i on some euro markets, but I've never heard of N54/N55 being labelled otherwise than 335i oO

I've had a 325i, 330i and now 335i. All E90s. They all ran the same, got the same fuel econ. From what I understand the HPFP issues have been fixed with the recall campaign in 2010/2011.

I liked all 3 cars but there is no comparason in terms of power. If reliability was my absolute top concern I wouldn't buy any BMW to begin with. I'd be in a Lexus likely.

BMW isn't great on reliability and us fan-boys shouldn't defend the brand for it. The 335i is best in class, but it has its problems nevertheless.
I'm not saying other european premium cars are better.

Pre-owned BMW 3 series (certified or not) are risky because when brand new the BMW 3 series are relatively accessible and very nice to drive and there are so may "enthusiasts" out there that can afford these cars, beat the $#@% of them and/ or tear them apart, track them, use all kind of unapproved oils they believe are superior etc ... then when the things start to go wrong they try to put everything back together and pass their car over to you.
I never buy pre-owned and maybe for this reason my BMW’s have always been very reliable. Although I've owned two 335’s with N54 I didn't have HPFP issues nor any other major issues, only small stuff that the incompetent dealers couldn't fix (actually I got the cars back with other problems due to their incompetence) and I had to find the necessary time and do it right. It is a pleasure to work on BMW’s because these cars are so well made; the problem is I don't have always time for this... each and every time after I got the car back from the dealership I've noticed they put extra miles on my car ranging from ~27- 41 miles. This started from the first day the car got in their hands (after each European delivery.) Based on how the car handled I suspect they beat the $@#% of the car too, on each occasion. If your car is a 335 the chances they will use your car as some sort of a free rental is much higher.
I suspect all of the above doesn't apply to Toyota’s and Honda’s, it is a BMW specific situation due to the nature of these cars. BMW of NA must step in and fix this otherwise they will have to pay the price for their dealers incompetence, sooner or later.
