XI and wheel??

Im currently running a square set of 18x9 oem M3 wheels with 225/45/18 front and 255/40/18 in the rear. I went to a tire shop today and asked the salesman about getting 255/40 /18 in the front to match the rear. He said its not a good idea because it would probably rub when I turn. That fine, so when I asked him what would be the perfect square tire setup, he made a phone call. As per the person on the phone, on an XI, I should not have 18x9 it must be 18x8 with 225/40/18 all around and if I stay with 18x9 he wouldn't recommend any tire size because it will mess up my differentials. How true is this?? Any feedback would help....

i cannot think of any reason running square would mess up your diffs no matter what size they are.. unless you are running something super heavy and your axles cant handle it (thats just my theory.. anyone can correct me on that)... if anything your staggered setup would mess with your diff.. i come from the quattro family and running staggered has always been a big no no.. but ever since coming to the BMW XI family, i havnt seen anyone say dont do staggered.. so i wouldnt worry!

I first purchased a staggered setup then changed the fronts with 18x9 and kept the tires. thats why I went to the tire shop to get square tires

how would 18x9 wheels and other than 225/40 tires mess up the differential?
if it is true, my plan need to change, I am planning to do 18x9.5 / 255 / 40 all around square setup.
Obviously I will widen the front.
