Another belt gone...... shredded my belt into pieces and my pulley has huge chunk missing.....

if there is no solution other than replacing the sub-frame which is $600 part, i was considering grinding away a little material where the pulley comes in contact with the frame.

Need more people to lawyer up on this. Unfortunately, since this only happens on 07 and mid 08 models, there isn't that much population of people for a large class action lawsuit yet.

Do a google search for: Check Your Serpentine Belt (SIB 11 09 08 - Power Steering Pulley and Subframe)
PM if you have any questions.

This is a design flaw that warrants a class action.

Is this just a problem w/2007's or does it also affect 2008's? FWIW, my car was produced in June 2007 but is a 2008 model.

I went in for new breaks today and my mechanic showed me that the pully was broken and i didn't have a belt. it also damaged some electronic. not a huge bill but if this is a BMW issue i wouldn't mind missing a repair bill.

It is a BMW issue SIB110908 but they refuse to admit it. How could you be able to drive when you dont have the belt?

Everyone should keep their receipts and work orders for reimbursement in case this actually happens one day.

Yeah, I read that in the 1st post.

The bulletin, however, says that it mainly occurs as a result of the engine mount flex when "driving at a high rates of speed over curbs and speed bumps." Not sure what "high rates of speed" means or why anyone would do that while driving over "curbs and speed bumps."

No indication of any belt/pulley problems w/my car yet, but I'll keep an eye on it.

I have a 7/2007 E90 335i. Great... 57k. I'm about ready to just dump this car. Now I know why so many people drive the Lexus/Infiniti/Acura's. The MB/BMW/Audi/VW is good stuff, with lots of problems. How is BMW not required to do a recall? Toyota had a human error with their gas pedals.... did a huge recall, and nothing was ever even found!!!

Did you drive over a curb or hit a huge pothole?

In my case, it was caused by getting rear-ended. The jolt apparently shifted the engine on its mounts enough to cause the pulley/belt to contact the frame. A few days later, the belt broke. Suddenly there was no power steering... very dangerous!

No pot holes or speed bumps, but the road wasn't in the greates of shapes either.

I was reading a motor trend or whomever article the other day and it was for a 2011 335is review test drive. They talked about how the engine is still the old N54, and making like 320HP and one thing they stated caught my attention. They said one change was the motor mounts are beefed up to handle the extra power. I wonder if we could look at using "is" motor mounts. Just a thought here..

This happened to me while running at the drag strip a few nights ago. PS pulley contacted the subframe during a quarter mile run shifting from 3rd-4th gear. Serpentine belt shredded and pulley was damaged. Had to be trailered home.

Has anyone upgraded the left side motor mount to an aftermarket or even 335iS mount? I suspect if the mount goes to shit on that side then replacing the serpentine belt and PS pulley isn't fixing the root cause, it's just fixing the symptom, and this will continually be a problem with spirited driving.
