Oil Thermostat Leak?

Is this an oil thermostat leak in my picture? Also, is there a screw missing in the part I circle in red in the picture? Does anyone know how much it'll cost to fix? I'm out of warranty. Prior to this I was losing 1 quarts of oil every 5 thousand miles. Now I'm losing 1 quarts about 3 thousand miles.

Standard Maintenance

OK -- you have a 335i without an oil cooler. An yes you have an oil filter housing gasket leak. The high heat of these N54 engines harden all the gaskets. Plus i think that as for the oil filter housing gasket -- that the coolant (which flows through the housing) must become acidic and further break down this seal. Do a little research -- easy job on a 328i but on a 335i you do have to slightly pull back the intake to get acess to one of the bolts. Some may have a small nifty tool -- but i had to remove the intake. Which gives you a chance to seem the infamous intake / valve gunk. You can just pull the intake back a little without pulling the whole thing off. However, if you have this leak -- I would suggest:

Oil filter hsn gasket
Valve cover gasket
Thermostat and WP -- you have to drain the coolant anyway
Any oil on the belts -- change serp / idlers / tensioner

.
.
All common issues that WILL happen to all N52 engines near 100k or less. Enjoy!

OH YEA

That is not a missing bolt -- I think it is an engine hoist location when the engine is installed at the factory.

At an Independent shop...
No more than 4 hr labour charge.
Honestly, a shop should charge 3 total.

The OFH gasket is 20.
And a gallon of BMW anti-freeze.
Oil and filter is what ever you currently pay.

Don't go to the dealer Outside these prices.

Just my 2cents.

In some threads Indy shops have charged as low as $250. Dealer is $500+. The job is easier on your car due to no oil cooler, which should help just a bit cost wise.

A local shop quoted me $530 for 4 hours of labor. The dealer quoted me $940.
