How did you afford your BMW?

So howd you do it? Hard work? Luck? Saving? Marry the right person? Spare no details. No judgement here either. Driving a BMW is not the status quo, and Im curious to see how we all wound up here.

My story: I worked my ass off as a contractor at my job, and after what seemed like an eternity, I was finally offered a full-time position. My savings from that, plus a little money I made from a wise (alright.... lucky) investment, afforded me my 335 :-)

-handed down 99 Toyota Camry when I turned 16
-parents bought older brother 350z a years later (was MY dream car at the time)
-spent the next 3 years secretly crying from jealousy
-Camry got too old and started to fall apart
-started looking for a used g37 coupe (yes I did use the "You got him a 350z so you HAVE to get me a nice car too..................or i WILL assume you love him more")
-found a lot of g37 vs 335i reviews online, eventually switched over to the BMW.
-Cousin who works at a Nissan dealership found me a used 335i in GREAT condition ($27k)
-a week later......drove onto my driveway with my 335i :]

Parents are paying half of the payment. Working my butt off as a barista to pay the other half.....and a few mods every once in awhile

Making payments on the majority of the amount, I'm going to assume this is how the vast majority of people afford cars these days.

Went to college, got into medical school, 4years of intensive study followed by 3 years of residency and 2 more years of fellowship in my specialty. BMW was my dream car from the age of 9 and rather than have my parents buy one for me or stretch to own one early on I waited till I could pay for it myself as a reward. 2 months into private practice walked into a dealership and drove out with my reward to myself for all the hard work over the past decade. Makes me smile every time I drive it

PS. I traded in a 97 honda accord that I was almost embarrassed to drive into the dealership.

I waited until I was 60 (and still working as construction project manager but kids through college and gone, etc.) and still financed 80% of the purchase. But I got my dream car (black 3 series) and because I waited so long, I got 300 HP to boot! I don't regret a thing . . .

Bought and paid-off an '08 Honda Civic Si that turned-out to be a lemon. After a long 10-month battle against Honda, I won the lemon case. Received a big check from Honda, bought a used '06 330i with cash in hand and still pocketed 6k!

Im 40 y.o. engineer. Im frugal on my purchases and always get a smokin deal because I wait until only smokin deals come along rather than impuse buy (and yes its hard to resist the impulse).

I could have paid cash for my 328, but financing was cheaper (3.25% finance, while my $19k is making 8% in a mutual fund, money bein' made.) On top of that, if I had to, I could sell my car at a profit today. That wont be the case in about a year or so.

Worked and waited 'till I could afford it.

Drove: Datsun, Acura, Chevy, Jeep, Ford, Honda, Nissan & MB before getting the BMW.

It's only a car, and in 8-10 years, it'll be on the same scrap heap with every other make.

There's more to life than just cars, so no need to risk your finances to drive a nice car.
