Misfire's on Cyl 1 - Do I need to replace multiple fuel injectors?
Hello,
Starting last week when I accelerate under high loads (4, 5, or 6th gear WOT) at high speeds 85+ a SEL light is thrown but more importantly the engine seems to shut off Cylinder 1 causing the engine to subtly shake whenever the gas pedal is depressed. The only remedy is to pull over and restart the car. Sometimes the SEL light goes away and sometimes it stays. If it stays then 3 codes are logged although the HPFP code is always there and it isn't related to this problem. Daily driving is no problem, except my wings are clipped. Codes Thrown P0301 P29CD P2AAF (been on there since I installed COBB so likely not related - Map 1+ FMIC Sport currently instaled) The car has undergone the HPFP recall by a previous owner so I do not know if any fuel injectors were replaced (calling tomorrow to find out). Before I tear the engine apart I want to order a new fuel injector for Cylinder 1, possibly a coil, walnut blasting equipment + seals and get ready to install my custom length charge pipe from ER Racewerks at the same time (weird E93 issue affecting only some cars). QUESTION I have read that BMW techs say to replace at least 3 fuel injectors on the same bank if you are replacing one. I don't want to do this for shits & giggles so is it necessary? I have an INPA cable and the BMW Coding software to code the new FI. I just don't want to pay for 2 additional FI's when they are not needed. Also, I have heard you are not supposed to mix the old and new design fuel injectors (probably on the same bank). True/false? Best case scenario I order one FI plus the FI rings/install kit, replace a single coil and the misfire goes away. Worst case scenario I replace 3 FI's and waste $400 in the process. In the meantime I have put in some Lucas Oil cleaner in the gas and am waiting to get through the first tank of that. Next I have ordered the 3M Fuel System Cleanup Kit for $25 at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER I know we are DI so it won't clean the valves (hence the walnut blasting equipment) but it should clean the fuel injectors, right? I am also ordering the Techron Fuel System Cleaner 20oz since it is recommended for our cars anyway (supposedly it's rebranded for the BMW fuel cleaner) and from what I've read does a better job at dissolving the buildup in the FI's than Lucas Oil. My main concern is ordering the right number of FI's because I'm only tearing this beast down once to get rid of the misfire, carbon buildup and replace the short charge pipe. Thanks in advance.

BMW recently came out with new injectors. If you're in need of replacing, good luck finding the 'old' injector. I am sure some folks still have them in stock who would like to sell them. |

IIRC you'll have to replace all injectors but I would makes sure it's not the coil. Just switch that coil with another and see if the misfire moves with it.

Thanks for the tips. I am waiting to hear back from the dealer about the injectors and whether they swapped them or not during the HPFP recall. In the meantime I'll move the coil around to see if the misfire moves.
NEW QUESTION Do I have to take out the injector to get the part #? If so can I just put it back in after writing down the part number or do I need to replace some one-time use parts when reinstalling while I wait for the proper injector to arrive? I am definitely going to search for sources for the same part # that's in the car now.

Phil325i Thanks for the video. Will do this first.
Just spoke w/my dealer and they kindly located the ticket performed at another dealer to tell me that they replaced replaced 4 injectors (1, 2, 3 & 6) on March 2011 using part #13537585261 (labeled Previous version in link above). The HPFP was "reprogrammed with the new program" although the actual HPFP was replaced in 2010 prior to this service (forgot to ask about any FI's being replaced when HPFP was replaced). So it looks like they mixed the 2nd generation FI with the 1st gen FI (on cyl 4 & 5 they did not replace - unless this was done on the previous HPFP swap service in 2010). The good news is that the 261 FI's can still be found. The bad news is that my stealer wants $239.99 for one. It is available online for $122 at http://tomkinsonbmwparts.com/parts/i...&siteid=215996 but I wonder if they will just give me the new 079? EDIT: ordered it just in case. Price was right ($134 w/shipping) and SKU matched so we'll see if it arrives as advertised.

Quick update: uninstalled the COBB when taking the car to dealer for service and had them diagnose the problem with all my codes cleared. Guess what? No misfires and no codes. I get the car back and throw Stage 1 + FMIC Sport and misfires appear immediately. Dropped it down to Stage 1 + FMIC Drive and misfires will happen but only after multiple WOT or turning w/WOT.
I have a coil on order and did receive confirmation from the dealer that the fuel injector I purchased is the correct SKU to replace mine with. I also ordered some walnut blasting tools and will put all of this crap together to see if I can get my wings back, but it won't be done for a few weeks (no time).
