Unhappy Eye Surgery

A couple of weeks ago, I got popped in the eye while playing basketball. Turns out that I got a lower orbital fracture, and it's inhibiting my eye movement. I get double vision now when I look up. Gonna get surgery in 3 weeks... Procedure takes an hour, and they make an incision in my lower eyelid to implant something to fix this. Has anyone had this type of surgery done? Just wondering about complications that I could be facing...

I've had several serious medical procedures done and can understand your anxiety; however, you really talk to your doctor about the risks and complications. Maybe someone here has some knowledge of the procedure, but you need to be comfortable with your doctor and only talking to him/her can help you with that. Keep positive and best of luck.

Haha... No, my eye isn't drooping into my sinus! Fortunately, my eyes are aligned fine still, and also, I don't have any pain around the area! It hurt like hell for the first few days, but I've recovered since then. I spoke with the doctor yesterday, and he seemed pretty optimistic about the surgery. He's done over 100 of these over the past 7 years, so I am confident he will do his job well. The worst that can happen is that there's excessive bleeding, and that eye will go blind... But he hasn't had that happen before, so knock on wood...

I realize that talking to my doctor is the best way to get answers, but it's reassuring to hear from people who have had this surgery performed well.

I remember hearing about the dog of a kid whose related to my cousin's brother-in-law by marriage that got hit with a baseball having something similar done, but no closer than that to the procedure. . .

Surgery is not 100%. My niece had brain tumor on the hearing nerve, and they warned that in about 5% there is some collateral damage to the nerve that controls the facial muscles. She ended up in the 5% and looks like she had a stroke at age 29. But it's slowly getting better, I'm just afraid she won't get back to 100%.

The ear bone replacement surgery I'm going to have at the end of August has a 1% chance I'll look the same (stroke), and about 15% chance I'll be even more completely deaf in that ear after the surgery, but I'm pushing ahead with confidence.

If you're very nervous, or concerned that you really don't need the surgery ('only when I look down'), go to another ophthalmologic surgeon for a second opinion (preferably an oculoplastic surgeon). It will be reassuring, or you'll find out the surgery is unnecessary.

For the second opinion, go to someone who has done 500 of these surgeries; find someone who sees patients at the local trauma center (where most of these injuries come from). What town do you live in? UMDNJ sees a lot of trauma - try there (if it's close by). A quick search of the web reveals:

http://www.umdnj.edu/eyeweb/library/turbin.html

Roger E. Turbin, MD, Oculoplastic Surgeon at UMDNJ

*Whatever you do, don't delay the surgery.

BTW, it's a very common surgical procedure. Good luck!

Just wanted to give you guys an update on this. I had the surgery yesterday, and it took about 3 hours rather than the anticipated 1 hour for this procedure. Everything turned out great . Muhlenberg hospital in Plainfield, NJ is great. Their nurses and doctors were very attentive and made me feel comfortable about the surgery.

Currently, I have some stitches around my eye which will come out tomorrow, after which I can drive again. The recovery process has been pretty good so far - I only had pain yesterday after the surgery. It's more of a nuisance right now to only have use of one eye.

Thanks for the comments and advice!
