Connecting Samsung Galaxy S3 to iDrive
Has anyone succeeded in connecting this phone to the iDrive? I had an iPhone 4S with a BMW supplied Y cable that connected the audio in as well as USB, so I could control the tracks, etc from the iDrive.
I tried contacting Samsung support and googling, but so far no joy. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Connected SGS3 via Bluetooth, plays music & makes/receives calls - rock solid connection unlike the previous HTC
Steering Wheel controls will do volume & track up/down - iController will do the same & the display gives track info |

Did you manage to access music via Bluetooth on your previous HTC?? If so how?! What year is your car?

The car is a late 2010 LCI 320d.
Yes I could access music on the HTC but I switched it off becasue the connection was so flakey. You need to switch on Audio aswell as telephone in settings, both on the phone bluetooth & the car bluetooth. If you have iDrive you will then yet the bluetooth music icon lit |

Ah - I see the problem. My car is a 2007 model with the older iDrive and controller, so I can't stream music through the bluetooth connection. I tried to get an adapter to convert a Y cable I had but that doesn't work. I am thinking of an adapter with a female iPhone connector and a male micro USB to plug into the phone in case this works with the Y cable I already bought for the iPhone. Or, I could just buy an iPod!

I do have combox but i don't really know what advantage i get from it. I read somewhere that it would give me album art on the iDrive screen but i don't have 6FL & I've never seen any via Bluetooth. No matter, I'd rather see the map than the title of the track I'm listening to on screen.

Do you have the later iDrive - i.e. what year is your bimmer? I think that mine, being a 2007 model, has an older iDrive and can only use Bluetooth for phone calls, not for music

I am able to use my S3 with iDrive on my 2012 328i fine, but there are a few irritating quirks. One of them is that the 'received' calls history on the iDrive displays the numbers that called me, not the corresponding contact name from the address book of my S3.
On the iPhone, the received call lists the name of the contact as long as the contact is in my iPhone's address book. |

When I eventually get my car back I'll check functionality with my Galaxy Nexus too. Should be similar. I know I get Bluetooth playback just like my old 4S but I notice there's a lack of album/artist info. Like Ian I've never checked call logs though.

I've just checked the call logs & both have full names. I have to say the SGS3 works flawlessly in the car, much better than the old HTC ever did.
