As the BMW AUC web page does not list specifically what is covered by the 120 point check, would you consider this tyre to be

1. BMW AUC approved
2. Fit and safe to be used on the road and pass an MOT or any other criteria

wheels its 19inch spider style rim which looks better than my one, so u got a E61 steve not a new 5er i would it would fail myself, but if you glued it would they notice it after

Schoolboy error.

You're assuming that the checks were made at the Dealers in the first place.

The 120 point checklist is one for the subsequent owner to go through (or not!).

You simply cannot expect the sales department to stump up the £100 odd per hour labour rate for a BMW "technician" to check the car over.

Are you sure its an RFT?

I thought the E6x M sport spider rim in 19" were one of the few options that was non-RFT only? (may that was pre LCI only, not sure).

In theory you should always replace tyres with sidewall damage. However there will be damage you can argue is not structurally relevant - that looks maybe 2-3mm deep, so I'd say it possibly marginal from that perspective.

It shouldn't be sold with them as an AUC IMO, but if it was on your own car would you risk continue using it? Maybe. Need to have a closer look really to gauge how significant it is.

Are you asking in order to sell to a dealer like this?

I bought it but didn't spot the damage until after delivery. Dealer says its safe and passed AUC checks. Its about 3-4mm deep. I was under the impression any sidewall damage was a no no whether RFT or not. Just doing homework tonight on the subject.

Remove the section that's hanging. If you don't see any cords then it's surprisingly ok to drive on. That section of the tire is pretty thick, on most tires it's designed to help protect the rim.

In this case I'd push for a replacement. I think it is generally accepted as a rule of thumb that any sidewall damage means replace - but I also suspect that this is due to the difficulty in categorising damage and risk. I don't think the dealer is qualified to make that assessment - I don't think the tyre manufacturer would back up their view for instance.

I'm sure you can find any number of tyre guidance/manufaturer website quotes saying just this if you google.

Having said all that, if I judged the damage did not compromise the likely strength of the sidewall then I 'might' risk using it. Its a difficult one though as you can't be 100% sure of the criticality of the thickness of the sidewall in that area and the stresses (inc thermal) it is subjected to, esp at high speeds. I would generally expect a tyre to be able to cope with a 3mm gouge though - its probably a design criteria - but I'm only speculating.

However if the tyre was 'bulging' at all in that area and showing signs of deformation - IMO its a no brainer to replace.

I assumed run flat as there is no spare nor tyre kit!!

I also assumed they were staggered fitment but I also have 245/35x19 front and rear. I googled and I found a couple of forums saying the rears should be 275/30x19??!!

More homework tonight.

The plot thickens - says here its 9.5" rear with 275s on the rear on an E60 - BUT also implies the touring E61 is 8.5" 245 alround....

This ties in with the fact that they were never offered on pre LCI E61s - I remember this may have been because the wide rears (when people tried saloon wheels fitted to tourers) would catch on the arches - maybe BMW got around that by using with same wheels alround? Maybe they also changed the non-RFT too (looks like it from your post above).

That looks like the rim protector bit of the tyre so not the 'actual' sidewall ... and is almost certainly OK and not illegal.

Just ask for it in writing that it is safe and/or complies with the AUC check.
