Suspension set-up with minimal or no drop
Looking for gurus opinion here...
Is there any coilover kit on the market that allows height adjustment such to keep the original? I already have a M-sport which is lower 15mm over std and do not want any further drops like the 30/50 mm usually advertised. I am looking to solutions such to improve handling (I do tracks) while keeping decent ride confort. From my readings the answer should be "no" but I might be wrong. Maybe FK silverline is the only one that allows the minimal drop (15/20mm). Alternative route would be replacing shocks only and in this case what would you suggest an why? |

If you are not looking to lower the car anymore then don't get the Coilovers. just find a shock and strut combo to go with your stock springs
And your "I am looking to solutions to improve handling (I do tracks) while keeping decent ride comfort" really doesn't make that much sense, if you want track performance you will have to give up some of the comfort. Unless you go to an adjustable system like the PSS10. and that will give you a chance at having both

...that's why I said "decent" I am fully aware handling and confort do not really go together. As to pss10 they would be already on if not for the 30mm drop.... |

The FK Silveline would give you significantly better handling, while at the same time allowing you the ability to adjust the height according to your preferences at that moment. (Ie. Track or Street) Photo for reference: You might want to also consider H&R Sport springs, which improve handling but do not really slam the vehicle. Over all I think the coils might be the best option if you going to track it. I know they are a little pricey over spring and struts but I think you will be over all happier. If either of these sound like something you are interested in shoot me PM and I will create a link just for your application! Cheers Last edited by ECSTuning; 03-04-2013 at 10:36 AM.. |

-1 each on what both of these guys said. KW Street Comforts allow you to keep the drop to a minimum or no drop at all, provide a more comfortable ride than the stock sport set up, AND improve handling. I too thought I'd have to give up some comfort for better handling but the KW setup proved me wrong. Do a search and you see some feedback from other Street Comfort owners.
I suspect that you won't like the HR sport springs as they do sacrifice comfort for flatter cornering, but the KW Street Comforts don't... |

As I have the M-sport e92 with sport suspension that is already lower 15mm over non M-sport. Will the FK Coilover Silverline X keep my current height? If not what is the minimum drop (lower) I can have with the settings? thanks |

His best scenario would be to just swap in a new shock and strut and use the stock springs. If he's not looking to lower the car or change the comfort, and most people gauge comfort by the spring rate, then the weak stock shocks/struts just need to be changed out

Maintain your stock springs, the rates are perfectly fine for track use. Yes, they are a bit on the soft side but I don't think it's a huge compromise. Just find a good set of shocks and you'll be set. I've had good luck with the Bilstein HDs, and I have always preferred Bilsteins' monotube high pressure gas setups over twin tube oil shocks, but the ride is a bit more harsh in comparison. Some people are quite happy with the Koni FSDs and they seem to work fine on the track to. If you want high end adjustable dampers then contact Vorshlag as they can get you AST shocks to use with stock spring applications but are still double adjustable. Heck you can get their triple high/low compression adjustables but I'm not so sure you can use a stock spring with those dampers. Call them up and see what they can offer... TCKline may also have something available as well.
Finally, Dinan has shock / spring combinations that have minimal to no lowering, but if you're going that route you might as well keep the stock springs.

The FSD's will improve steering response and reduce roll a bit, and they will improve comfort as well. Don't expect a dramatic difference though. If your roads are pretty smooth, the Koni Sports provide more improvement.

+1 on shocks only (because you need to retain ride height). My old car had stock springs and koni yellows/sports (rebound adjustable), and I was very impressed with the difference they made over the stock shocks - even when the stock shocks had eibach lowering springs.

I finally installed them. I installed Koni Yellow (sport) with oem springs.
I couldn't be happier with the choice. The Koni service I went to set them: front one turn harder, rear 1+1/4 harder. The overall drive feeling is substantially better! Car do feels much more planted to the ground and the confort is not in any way compromised. |
