Not even cold yet.....

and another headlamp washer gone.

It's the same one that was replaced only a few months back. It was there this morning and I don't even remember using the washers today in the few miles I've done.

How do BMW treat the washers in extended warranty period doubled to the fact it was only done 6 months ago too?

The guy was ready with the screenwash concentrate excuse.

I was quick to say that the concertrate of mine is -50odds and the thing fell off today when the day started at 3.5 and rose to 7.5 degress, it had been replaced here just months before and it's a well known design fault that I fully expect to be covered under warranty.

5th January is the earliest date though.

A pretty serious pain the arse if you are going to face this every winter.

Is there a reason you haven't pulled the fuse for the washers?
I go through a lot less screen wash and don't get water marks all over by bonnet after turning the washers off.

I screen wash has nowt to do with it, as the alcohol at the jet end evaporates between uses. That why my Mondeo's washer jets are always frozen in the cold weather

I'm pretty sure they have a negative effect on the headlights, covering them with moisture which just collects dust.

Proper cold?

It's still 13 degrees in Aberdeen.

I can't remember a milder winter.

On topic of the washers, it really should not require to pull fuses to get things not to fall to bits.

Headlamp washers are required when you have xenon headlamps to pass the MOT test.

I think bmw should be forced to recall cars and fit washers that are fit for purpose.

We've had this before. Pulling the fuse won't stop the damage to the headlight washers if the water in the pipes freeze.

In Kerr's case, it sounds like duff fitment by the dealer 'cos that happened to me once before.

The first sign that there might be something wrong is, after a few very cold days, the cover plate(s) project from the bumper and they are on their way out. That has only happened to me because there wasn't enough screen wash in the car (I always had some - but clearly not enough) but having learned, I always have lots of screen wash in it now and though we've had a few -5c nights, I've had no problems.

I've poured plenty screenwash into my washers and been using the skooshers so that it circulates fully to the headlamp washers. haven't had an issue this year even when we had the few cold days a couple of weeks back, it is a lot milder than last year though!

is it possible someone stole this one this time round?

Headlamp wash action IS NOT checked during an MOT Test; they are only there to satisfy Vehicle Construction & Use Regs.

Danny - reading Alan's post makes me realise you're wasting your time pulling the fuse; as when the low-strength washer fluid freezes in the pipework/jet, that is what causes the lost jets.

The only benefit pulling the fuse is making your screenwash tank last a lot longer!!

I pretty sure you are wrong with that.

My car passed it's MOT the other week with no issue at all. The headlamp washers were checked.

I've read it quite a few places before and here is the wording taken from the direct gov website for a MOT test.

Lights Condition, operation including HID and LED headlamps for cleaning, self levelling and security. Headlamp aim. Main beam warning light. Bonnet Securely latches in the closed position.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...Mot/DG_4022109

I've always thought they required washer jets as there is too many people and guideline documents that include this to be wrong surely?

I think the duff fitment is probably the likely cause.

It was replaced in May so had not even come close to cold temperatures. The first time it does come close to colder, not freezing conditions, even with -50 screen wash it still pops out.

Thumbs up

Kerr! You're quite right - I can't keep up with the changes!

From the MOT Testers manual

Quote:
Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted.

Does that mean 'if they're not fitted don't check them'
