Question: is there any way to drain the oil that remains in the oil cooler? Or, does one just let old oil in the cooler mix with the new oil?

had the same problem for my oil filter cap... i had to buy a strap wrench from autozone. for some reason, the dealers screw that thing in tight.

you can also get a wrench adapter that fits around the oil filter cap - 86 mm i believe?

Just so someone doesn't duplicate my stupidity... the filter cap is like any screw (counter-clockwise to loosen), but when you first open it warm, it will take a whole lot more than the rated ~20 ft-lbs to open, and will have to be turned several times with a wrench before it can be removed the rest of the way by hand. When I put the fresh filter in I only tightened it to ~20 ft-lbs. Mistake. Didn't leak at all at idle or driving gently, but once the car warmed and I got into some boost, some oil snuck past the seal and made a little bit of a mess. So follow the suggestions on lining up the green markers, or tighten it down to the same level of pressure it took to get the filter off. Guess that's why the dealers or prep center screw that thing in really tight.

I have a E90 with the sport package. Did my first oil change using the rhino ramps. I had to use 2 3/4 inch plywood glued together in order to raise the car up before going up the ramps to clear the front skirt. Like all the other post the oil and filter were extremely dirty for 7500 miles. Bought my oil from tischers, 7 qts of BMW 5-30 and a filter for $62 and that included shipping. My local BMW dealer wanted $10 per qt and $20 for the filter. I put in 6.5 qts and my guage shows it is full. Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks for all the suggestions here - just performed my own oil change on 07 e92 that I purchased used (non-cpo). I wanted to get it changed, because quite frankly, I wasn't sure what was in there and I didn't buy it from a BMW dealer, so who knows. I did notice that the old oil filter did not appear to be a genuine BMW part. Having said that, three questions I could use some thoughts on:

1. I swear I can shift the car (6mt) smoother after the oil change - could this be a result of the engine having incorrect oil in it before (non-synthetic perhaps)? The engine just seems more willing to match revs without fuss. Or is this just a placebo effect on my part?

2. Are there any long term consequences for running incorrect oil for a relatively short period of time (5-7k) since the last known dealership service on my car?

3. Is there an easy way to tell if the oil I drained was synthetic?

Send a sample for oil analysis if you still have it in your collection pan. It's not as ideal as collecting it as it flowed, but would still give you some basic answers for $25-30.

Quick question, when I changed my oil filter, that middle plastic piece on the cap (where the tiny rubber ring fits)... that whole thing came loose from the main cap. Is that normal, or did it break?

Hi Spdlmt, I don't think it should come loose. Mine certainly wasn't.

OMG... cant get the oil filter cap off for anyting... bought a strap wrench..didn't work. I am beside myself..... I had my buddy dump the oil in as I was taking the oil filter cap off and he got done before I did... now i have a contaminated oil filter draining into my fresh new oil and cant get the thing off for nothing.....Never in my life have I strapped around something so hard... is there some kind of cap the goes over this with and square the clamp down on and turn.... I mean come on with this thing..This is why I pay so much to have the dealer do it... I asked at the dealership...anything special I should know about an oil change..... they said ...no...just an oil change..I bet they are laughing now...

Get an oil filter wrench from Walmart. Fram has them for $9 big wrench looking thing with orange handles. Use the tightest setting and a microfiber towel... best instructions on youtube... 135i same engine as most E90,s Drian plug is at a different angle thats it.

My hand is black and blue.. those strap deals suck... get the wrench...

Just did mine.
Worked great, took 6.5 quarts,
Several times I had to reming myself, lefty loosy, righty tighty!
The oil shot out real far from the pan once I opened it up, actually place your oil "bucket" closer to your right wheel than under the pan.

I would like to thank all the guys who take some of their time to post a DIY thread with photos, to help the others.

Anyone with the link or part number to the oil filter wrench?

Is it compatible for all BMWs (we have a E90 and a E60)?

TIA
