Park the car and leave it in N (neutral)

Yes, but after you put in Netural you can't get the key out

No, the engine won't shut unless its in P. I just tried.. A message in iDrive appears telling the same thing.

Most automatic transmissions have a lock-bypass feature - a small hole somewhere in the console, you push something into this hole (like a conventional key, screwdriver, pen, etc.) which allows you to pull it out of park without the key being in the ignition.

I couldn't find any reference to this in the manual... maybe in the newer ones the lever on the console isn't physically attached to the transmission any more and it is all remote/fly-by-wire? How do they take these cars out of park to tow them (i.e. illegally parked) when the owner isn't there?

Most cars (all?) with automatic transmissions have some physical button somewhere--usually hidden--that is a "parking lockout over-ride" feature.
For example, in the Toyotas (multiple) I used to drive, the button was hidden under a small piece of black plastic near the shift lever itself. You had to pry off the plastic cover, then you could push the button to allow you to change into Neutral.

EDIT: Wow, what dumb luck. Just looked up and saw PTinVT essentially said the same thing as me.

I grew up in Bangkok before I came here. It's normal to park like that especially the college I went to undergrad degree (but I had manual tranny so I didn't have much problem. If you can drive in Bankok, you can drive everywhere.

You probably have to go to the dealer to remove the lock at selector lever but I doubt they will do it for you because they are afraid to void your warranty. They did that with e46 for first couple years after it came out.

The only way to do this is just open the lid around the gear switch. There is a small "button" to the right, marked with red. Just push it, and now you can shift to any position.

I just had to do this, as I was installing the TVinMotion module.

One interesting thing about our cars is that even without CA, if the drivers door remains closed, you can turn off the car, pull out the key, hit the start button (within a few seconds), and it turns on without the key. In any gear if you hold the start/stop button it will shut off, including N, so what some others here have said should work fine.
