I think BMW added a clutch delay valve to the manual gearboxes that gave the clutch and easier time, if you change it or remove it you can speed up the clutch transitions

I am sure a more technical response will be along soon, perhaps with pictures too

You've pretty much nailed it mate - as you said, fitted to manual gearbox cars, basically the OEM delay valve restricts the flow of clutch fluid in one direction (when you release the pedal) the idea is to reduce shock loading on the clutch plate when you attempt aggressive gear changes or try dumping the clutch for a quick get away.

In reality, if you can drive a 'stick shift' (as our friends across the pond say) then you don't really need the CDV and can replace it with a de-restricted version and do what you want with the clutch.

Pretty easy to fit - have a word with Ant.
