I thought I saw smoke coming from the hood...

But there was no smell. The "smoke" was also intermittent, sometimes appearing, sometimes not. It also did not seem to be coming from the exhaust of cars around me. I checked the hood and there doesn't seem to be any damage but I'm far from an expert. Any explanations?

There could be a few possible reasons for the smoke. The ones I can think of are:

1. It is raining and the outside temperature is cold.

2. You may have some sort of leak in your engine bay, most likely an oil leak.

Raining? Wet? Did you just drive thru a puddle? Was you car cold? And still cold?

If there was no smell and it was intermittent white smoke(steam) I wouldn't sweat it.

Yes, it was raining and wet and cold. But I've driven in those conditions before with no symptoms.

why when it is "cold and rainy" do these cars smoke like hell out of the tailpipes? ... the minivan beside me and lifted ford truck aren't doing any of that (i realize they may warmed up already?)

I notice this EVERYTIME it is damp and rainy out, what gives?

i get that condensation gets into the exhaust but it appears like smoke. I know there is nothing wrong with my car and this is normal but

If you had an undercarriage carwash, the excess water could be evaporating due to the heat from the engine.

It is definitely normal, this usually happens when I have a cold start and the smoke slowly goes away after a bit of driver.

+1, most likely you have a gasket leak. You said you don't smell anything so I'm not sure if it is

I just had this happen today, its chilly and it raining. Its just hot air not smoke. Your breath makes the same "smoke" in the weather.

I had something like this a few months ago on my '07 328i. Turns out it was an oil leak at the valve cover gasket. It was at a spot where the oil dripped onto a hot engine part (exhaust, I think) which made it burn. I had it fixed under CPO, but the fix failed and they had to replace the gasket again this month after my digital dipstick went down two notches. They found another leak from when my lifters were replaced for engine ticking a few years ago, which they also covered.

check your valve cover gasket and your oil filter housing gasket, both common leakers

ether valve cover gasket is leaking oil, which drips onto your headers and burn up, causing white smoke OR like the guys said, caused from rain.
