Any 328i out there with a fuel pump failure?

I just got fuel pump replaced on my 07 e90 328i. I've only heard stories of the failure on 335, but i guess anything is subject to failure.

Anybody had pump failure on their 328 more than once?

Mine failed about a month ago. Dealership replaced the pump's control unit(?). Unfortunately, that lasted only about 2 weeks before the car stalled out again. Then, they replaced the pump. So far, so good. Fingers crossed.

Is that sound s like a fuel pump failure?
Here what I have step by step:

1. One day filled tank up at 7-11 (in Rockville)
2. Next morning notices that car had very slight issues starting
3. All week long the time to start a car has build up to almost 2 seconds when engine cold. Still all right when hot (I mean just stop and then start again). But when cold it had 2 seconds of embarrassing to BMW chigi-chaging moments…
4. Scheduled visit to dealership (the one in Alexandria VA)
5. Direr reports that they could not reproduce the problem (very unlikely). But they can wash the car for free…
6. In two weeks after visit to the dealer Service Engine Soon light has popped up, and engine runs rough. Stopping and restarting would fix the issue…
7. In a few days problem progressed to troubles starting when warm.
8. Scheduled visit to dealership (the one in Alexandria VA)
9. Dealer reports that they could not reproduce the problem (very very unlikely). The fault code they have seen (and conveniently forgot) told them to replace wire for a left turn signal… (what a surprise)
10. In a two weeks time to start from cold got to 3 seconds. Then one morning “Service Engine Soon” light came on steady and would not disappear. It also felt that car runs on 5 cylinders only.
11. Scheduled emergency visit to VOB dealership in Rockville MD
12. Dealer reports that they fixed an issue by replaced sparkplug and coil on first cylinder. Car runs better, starts fine when hot, have barely nopticsable start issues after 10 minutes, But…. it still takes 3 second to start when cold…
13. A week later it takes over 4 second to start when cold, I feel like cylinders misfire right after start it sound rough for about 20 seconds then as car heats up it works ok…
14. Scheduled visit to dealership VOB in Rockville MD

Wow..sorry to hear all that..

I used to have similar problems to yours, but every time i took it in for service, they couldn't see the problem...UNTIL my car stopped in the middle of a freeway one day. THEN they replaced my whole fuel tank and the pump unit

Stopping on a free way does not sound encouraging :-(
I will take printout of this description to a dealer tomorrow...

I think this of one of the first times I've heard of the 328 having fuel pump issues! Surely the 328 doesn't use the High Pressure fuel pump of the 335i?

328 uses a regular fuel pump. There arent as many failures with regular fuel pumps but they're still a fairly common failure for any car.

now that I think about it, a month after buying my car, it stopped when I was waiting at a light. But never again...

I didn't know the 328i could also suffer from fuel pump problems.

Well, since last post I have visited dealership twice and both times mechanic ruled out pump failure as problem, here is what was done:

Visit 4: - coil and spark plug has been replaced for cylinder #1. It did not fix the issues and I were back to the shop in a few days

Visit 5: - injector has been replaced for cylinder #1. It did not fix the issues and I am scheduling another visit

Damn Alex, sorry to hear that. Well my fuel pump hasn't caused any problems since I got it replaced, but I'm going back to service tomorrow for some minor things. I hope you get yours worked out!

Whatever happened to all those fancy monitors and logs? Are they saying the car can't determine when its fuel pump goes south?

All current BMW's suffer from anything. Something new will pop up everyday at the dealer. We had an 09 M3 come in yesterday with a bad sending unit, the car had an empty tank with the gauge still reading half a tank.

It's not a surprise to me anymore seeing anything break on any current model.

Any idea on how much a 328i fuel pump costs? HPFP is very $$$$.

No.

Just be glad that you will also get a new fuel filter when the pump is replaced (ensure that they replace it) so you won't suffer starvation.

fuel pump failure

mine just failed at 46k miles and it an 09. I had problems starting when hot. They did a fuel pressure check and identified it that way. Pressure would drop by 75 psi in 30 minutes. I guess not the pump itself but the pressure regulator. The pump is ~400 cad
