SIMONIZ: good, bad, ugly?

Hi folks,

My baby (330i) arrived at the dealer last night and I have (perhapse misguidedly) accepted their SIMONIZ pitch and asked them to apply it. This is supposed to be a Teflone coating of the paint and comes with a 5 year guarantee.

What do people know about it? First and formost, is it harmful in any way? Does it reduce the effectiveness of other products like Zaino? Second, does it work? Does it really offer protection? Does it contribute to shine, etc?

Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am getting worried about this all of a sudden!

I really really really really hope that you did not pay a lot for it. I think you are talking about simoniz system 5 with Teflon. It cost the dealership less than 25 bucks for the kit and it maybe does a couple of cars. If you look on ebay and do a search for the two bottles they run for about 20-30 bucks plus shipping. It is a sealant like wax. When you do the Zanio process (It strips most of the stuff off your paint) it will take off the Simoniz layer. (Sealants like Zanio also has problems bonding to surfaces of other sealants but regular waxes do not) You can layer Zanio and then Carnauba wax but not the other way around.

On a side note, Dupont has made a point in the past about Teflon in car waxes. (they make their own products for car with teflon) It doesn't really do anything because it requires a high level of heat to have teflon bond to surfaces. Usually companies put it in products to make it easier to apply. Many car detailing forums frown upon teflon and it ability to actually do much or even anything at all.

Fusionnv,

Thanks for the info... if only it came one day earlier I could have pulled the plug on this The dealer wanted $400 for this treatment and I got him down to $250 thinking I did good... now it looks like I was a perfect prey

Oh well, I guess that compensates for being lucky enough to get the car within a week while people are waiting months for theirs. I went shopping for it last Saturday and I should be picking it up today.

I hear it's rubbish too! Ask them what happens to the paint when the product is over the 5 yrs? That is if you plan on keeping the car longer than
the length of the product!

Yes it was? What gave it away? Was it being in Boston or the Simoniz?

I'm sure it's not the only dealer that pushes this stuff. And I'm not the first or the last customer to pay for it either. I let my guard down on this one, but I ended up with a good deal overall. I got the exact car I wanted in 1 week. Not too shabby.

Simoniz System 5

I have researched and done comparisons on five other paint sealant products. SS5 is the only one that contains teflon and has exclusive license rights to that process. it is the only one that has a 5 yr warranty on the outside as well as the inside. I paid $595 for mine and it was well worth it. Check and see how much it cost to replace a seat cover of your vehicle. look on the EPA web-site and the NADA web site and see what they say about the paint on your car and resale value if you maintain your shine. The factory does not warranty your paint even on your new car, look at the warranty book and service manuel. If you got it at $200 something you got a bargain. You may be able to purchase bootleg stolen product from authorized dealers, but you do not get the 5 year warranty with it, you do the math. Rental car for 5 days $50 day. Will repaint or replace.
