Porsche coming out with 7 speed MANUAL tranny...

Yes, you read that right. Not PDK, but 7 speed MANUAL transmission!

Pretty interesting since the 6 speed manual is already a lot for a manual tranny. Make it 7 speed now?? Seems like 7 gear will be a tall gear for cruising speeds. Still wondering how the shift pattern will be besides the one illustrated under the comments. Thumbs up to Porsche for keeping the manual tranny alive!

I thought that's what the 6th gear is for, which is what the 5th gear was originally for, and so on.

I actually only use 5 of 6 gears most of the time, as I usually skip 5th and head straight for 6th anyway. Kudos for Porsche for finding a use for the 7th I guess?!

I'm pretty sure the 7th gear will be for fuel economy. Cruising at 7th gear will be more ideal and relaxing since the car is running at lower RPM's which in turn reduces engine noise. Downshifting to 5th or 6th would be thrilling IMHO. You could even go to 4th if you want...

Your right hand will be quite busy on track days for sure. Imagine taking a corner after a long straight on 7th gear... We just have to wait and see.

To be fair, there was never a thread dedicated to this story so you're good

I must have missed it too, thanks for the article

A 7 speed box, now that will be interesting. I like the dog-leg proposed layout, reminds me of the E30 M3; great for the track and spirited driving, as well.

Acceleration would be faster in each gear but, you would spend more time shifting. 911s already have a unusable first gear. I just seems like a lot of rowing for nothing.

What an awful shift pattern. My ideal would be :

1-3-5-7

2-4-6-R

Everyone can speculate all they want but the real test is to drive it. I don't know if I'll like it but I can't wait to try it out.

Those concerned with having to row extra gears know on a manual you can skip gears right? Its not like you would HAVE to go through 1-6 to get to 7...if 7 is tall and 1-6 are short I'm guessing you can go from 4 to 7 when getting on the highway just like many people on this forum go from 4 to 6.

Just saw the pics of the new 911 codenamed 991 on insideline at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

Shift pattern goes like this:

R---1---3---5---7
----|---|---|
----2---4---6

What do you think they 6th gear was for, and for that matter 5th gear, those are the two I can remember, I'm not sure if 4th was originally added for that reason or not.

It's simple really, as top speeds increased, to keep the same ratio distances you had to add gears. You didn't need a 5th gear for cruising when 3rd took you to 100 and the car could barely even go that fast.

Now they see 6th as being a useful gear for acceleration (which if you want to hit speeds efficiently at 150+ it is) So to gear it down they need a new one.

Where would the shifter sit in neutral? You'd have to move it over a tad to get into any gear. Porsche's layout seems ideal. I'd imagine there'd be a little more resistance to get it into either R or 7. Just imagine our current trans with a gear on the other side of the shifter
