Should I get rid of my car?
So since I moved from Deep Cove to Kitsilano (suburbs to non-suburbs for those who don't know Vancouver) I've put literally 200 kms on my car since the beginning of September (i.e. fewer than 25 kms / week). Even with a new baby we're finding that we just don't drive and my beloved 330i is sitting in my garage gathering dust.
Is it worth having what is relatively speaking a really nice car for the very few times I drive?

Hmm. Get a 328xi Wagon? Or import a 335D Wagon from Europe
I don't know, in my opinion keep the 330i, it's a nice car. Since you live in the non-suburbs I would be worried if you would get good money for your car. |

If you could replace your car with one better suited to your needs, require additional funds (don't we all) or just the garage space, than consider your options regarding "my beloved 330i".
I honestly feel for you since I have run out of garage and storage space and thereby have to make some equally difficult choiches. You might consider the suggestion above as one option as a new father and family man. My best wishes, Eberhard |

Even with the expense saved of not driving an expensive car you must take into consideration the inconvenience of not having a car the odd time you really need one. Renting is a pain and cabs suck.

except, i say voted for an "basic" car.... just be economical... later on when ur kid is bigger then re-upgrade until then, the extra cash is very handy as u alreayd know babie's are expensive.

Yea, I'm not really concerned about the money I'll save. It's more the principle of something just sitting there completely unused. That said, I tend to agree with you, and I'm sure that the second I got rid of the car I'd be thinking about what to replace it with...

keep it ,if only for those nice weekend getaways down south or to the mountains. young kids are easy to drag around. Think of ways to drive during the weekends. Just my 2C.

I wonder if I could sell this idea to my wife... Since we never use the car, surely it makes sense for me to get something far less practical, just for me. I'm thinking Cayman, Boxster S, that kind of thing.

I wish mine had the same beige interior as yours though.

If you have everything you need for daily life in Kits (food, shopping, work, recreation, etc) then I would get rid of the car. There is no point owning and paying for a car that is just sitting idle in the garage. You can sign up for a car program like zip car or take taxis for further distances for now.
Since you have indicated that the money is not a hugh concern, you can always purchase a new car when the time is more appropiate and perhaps it may even turn out to be an M. Just remember, the car is not an appreciating asset regardless of how much we love the car. It is a depreciating libability and does not get better with age. Good luck on your decision.

I live in the same area and work downtown, a 7 minute drive, and have only put on 2700 kms in the 4 months I have owned the car. I sometimes have the same thoughts...but I still think it's worth having the car. As far as I am concerned...I need a car, and I would rather drive a nice one. I guess it really depends on your financial situation. If your finances are pretty tight, yeah... then it might make sense to sell the car. If not....then keep it.

Believe it or not, I had to special-order the beige interior. For some reason, BMW didn't offer the Electric Red exterior and beige interior combo. Go figure!
