Any thoughts? I'm looking to purchase soon and I want to have a rough estimate of what a good buy would be. BMW sales are still down from what I understand and the demand is not as high as the supply is so hopefully getting a good deal shouldn't be too difficult. Any suggestions would be really great.

$500 over invoice is a good deal, you may or may not be able to swing that - depends on how motivated the dealer is. Anything below 1000 over invoice is OK, imo

So just curious but what not invoice period? I know most dealerships have a 2-3% kickback that they get back when they sell a vehicle that is not included in their pricing?

I've bought 2 new vehicles- an 04 4Runner and an 08 Altima and got both of them for invoice. Granted they are not bmw's though, but with the recession going on there are deals to be had...

Since BMW doesn't offer it's dealers "holdbacks", straight invoice is highly unlikely unless BMW is offering marketing support on any particular model.

For BMW, I've paid anywhere from $500 to $1500 over invoice.

I think the OP should consider leftover '09s. If you're looking for specific options, your local dealer can search any other dealer's inventory. $500 is very doable for the '09s and BMW is offering good finance rates, if you're going that way.

Thanks for the input. $500-1000 over invoice is what I was thinking, but I was unsure if this still holds for the 2010 models. I prefer the 2010 over the 2009 because the overall value of the car for the 2010 will be higher compared to the 2009.

Any more input would be great.

Have you thought about buying CPO or from Carmax. I don't know what much about the coupe (like if it's 1st model year or anything like that), but I bought a 2006 330i for $22,000. The reason I ask is b/c that car's sticker price in 2006 was $43,000, so it probably would have sold for just over 40. That's $18,000 gone in 3 years...

The car runs and feels like a new car too. The only thing missing is the new car smell.

I haven't looked it CPO but I will search around. I'm more inclined to by new, however.

That 4Runner I bought cost 32,500 and when you added in taxes and registration it came out to 35k. Sold it 5 years later for 12,700...that's over $22000 that is gone. On the other hand I had a vehicle with no issues for 5 years!

If you can find a nice used one go for it b/c it's a lot of savings. Right now CPO w/ BMW has a warranty to 100k miles and .09 financing. DO NOT GO FOR THE LOWEST PRICE USED. Go for one that you think will last for the long haul.

With carmax you can search their entire inventory online and they will ship it across the country for a fee and you have a 5 day return policy. I also added a 3 year/36k warranty to mine for $1800. HOWEVER, if I burn through the miles before three years they prorate the difference and refund it to you. For example if I burn through 36k miles in 18 months I will get $900 back...

7.5% over invoice

We're in a recession. BMW is in trouble. I paid $1400 under invoice when times were good. There is no way you need to pay invoice or over invoice. Good lord. Deal with them, bring your checkbook and then walk out. You should be able to get a great deal.

...unless BMW was looking to move a certain model. You definitely can't walk into a BMW dealership anytime of the year, pick a model at random, and pay under invoice. There would have to be a factory incentive for an under-invoice deal to happen.

Unless its been changed in the three years or so I know they were getting a 9% kickback and prior they were getting higher (13%). BMW saw that the demand was getting higher based on forcasts and wanted dealers to invest in more service bays and dealership modernization and they would make more money on the service side. So they gave them higher service repair fees for performing service and lowered the kickback on each car sold.

So imagine they make 9% for every car sold even if they sold at 0% over invoice. Any amount over invoice is pure icing on their cake and if they sell at MSRP they put candles on top for getting over on some poor shluck.. Of course all the dealers out there say that is their profit to pay for running the dealership , marketing, etc and all the expenses. I say bull, its to pay for exuberant salaries and bonuses of dealership management, parts management, and service management.

In terms of a deal, 0-2% over invoice is a good deal and certainly on the low end of that, 2-4% not bad but not to good, and 4% and over, the sales person/manager is getting over on you.

So it sounds like you have bought a new car or two in the last few years. Or is this just what you speculate what is happening since 2001 when you bought your last car?

The only way to get it under invoice is if its the prior year's model. Then they will offer your those good deals. You should be able to get between $500-$1000 over invoice.

Just wanted to update. I purchased the 2010 E92 for $500 over invoice and European Delivery (still need to finalize on Monday). Dealer threw in tinting (family previously bought from him) so I guess it would actually be <500. Platinum bronze, beige interior, premium package, cold weather package, navigation, ipod/usb adapter, and anti-theft.

Very excited about the car and to be part of these forums!
