AA / RAC and non-runflats

OK, so I ditch the run flat tyres and one day I'm driving down the M1 and I get a puncture. My tyre goo and compressor can't fix the puncture so I'm stuck on the hard shoulder.

What would the AA or RAC do? Would they tow me off as part of my cover or try and charge me extra?

Anyone have any experience of this?

i look forward to finding out in a day or two....which tyres have you got, i'm trying to decide....blackcircles.com have good prices on falken 452s and Dunlop SP9000s, or I could push the boat out a bit and get michelin PS2s which a lot of people seem to rave about....

I have Sport 9000's and they are a fantastic tyre, but it was luck of the draw as nothing else was available. I was after Eagle F1 assymetrical, but no stock - these would be number 1 for me.

EVO just did a test, look it up on their website

I did the deed yesterday and the difference is night and day!

The new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics are the way to go...

thanks for the tip, although these don't seem to be available in my sizes, I have 17 inch rims and the tyres on the car right now are 255/40/17 and 225/45/17

looks like i might go for the dunlop sp 9000s

Why not sell your standard wheels and tyres and put some 18's M Sport wheels on there.

If not, like I said, you'll love the Dunlops, they work really well on my car (H&R Suspension), and they are original equipement on BMW's I believe.

If I understood all the malarky about wheels and spacers and "staggered" and all the other stuff I'd maybe be tempted to lash out on some 19" wheels .

BMW OEM 19" wheels are a staggered fitment, in that the rears and wider than the fronts. No spacers are required

Front wheels are 8J x 19" (or 8" wide by 19" in diameter), ET37 offset
with 225/35 tyres

Rear wheels are 9J x 19" (or 9" wide by 19" in diameter), ET39 offset
with 255/30 tyres

So if you are going to get 19" wheels, you would need to stick to the same wheel dimensions as above, if you want to replicate the OEM suspension geometry. You can however go one size bigger on the tyres (ie. 235/35 and 265/30) which is how the Alpina D3 comes

Ditched my runflats today!

The original (Conti Sport SSR) rears were worn down to (past?) the tread wear indicators. The fronts had at least 4mm left. (20200miles in 8 months).

Bought a Tire Slime kit and put 4 Eagle F1's on, bought through Blackcircles.
The local dealer that fitted them reckoned the rears didn't need balancing.
Took it back after 20mins driving 'cos of vibration over 60mph.
They then balanced the rear wheels and it's now ok.

Don't believe them when they say the rears don't need balancing!

Kept the two fronts to go back on whenI sell it

what about the run flat sensors? they would be better for Santa Pod for sure, can lower the pressues and ACTUALLY make a difference lol

Only thing i like bout the RFT is the safety aspect when travelling at speed!

Didn't do many miles today to comment on the difference.

Maybe do a few tomorrow and visit some twisty bits. The ride can't be any harsher than with runflats fitted; it sometimes felt like a bone-shaker.

The TPMS sensors are attached to the end of the valve stems, so when they change the RFT over to normal tyres, they'll retain the use of the TPMS sensors too. No problem at all...

Are the TPMS sensors only on the coupe - I didnt have them on mine - I thought the TPS was callibrated via the rolling radius of the tia formt he ABS sensor
