I just spent 10 days in Germany and Austria with my new 325i (European Delivery). When picking the car up they said nothing about breaking in the engine, even though it is nearly impossible to not drive at 100mph+ on the Autobaun. It is funny that BMW puts the break-in procedures in the last half of the owners manual (<100MPH and <4500RMP for 1200 miles - including using the kick-down feature on the auto transmission). If it was such a big deal, you would think it would be on page 1 instead of hidden in the back.
Anyway...I hit 110MPH+ on numerous occasions and often ran at 95-100MPH. Even up to 110mph, you'll stay in the 3000-4000RPM range. In general, however, I did try to keep the car below 100MPH and under 4500RPM. With only a few exceptions (one redline and a few 5000-6000RPM excursions), it wasn't too hard to drive 850 miles and "sort of" follow the rules. If driving in the U.S., it should be extremely easy. Even if you follow the rules, the car is a complete joy . Todd. |

On my E46 M3 i did the full 3200 Miles before going over 5500. And on my e90 i will not go over 4500 and wait till 1500 miles because there is a huge diffrence when the engine is broken in correctly.

did the euro delivery....and would not pass up the opportunity to use the unlimited autobahn to its full potential......I broke it in by the book, well....until 400 miles, where I took it to the limiter at 155mph, and averaged 140 in all parts of the unlimited. There were a lot of construction zones where I had to do 40mph, so I took every chance I could! I posted a small vid on here. Here is the link

I know for motorcycles, there was a debate if one should easy/baby the engine until X amt of miles or just drive the piss out of if. There were comments how you should rev the engine to the max to ensure the pistons and seals form properly.
My Ducati was taking oil and it was apparent from the high mounted exhausts. The techs commented the valves didn't seal up properly during break in period (I did the baby method for this bike). I couldn't bare to follow the above method but I know some that do. So I drive the bmw more liberally after that experience. I believe varying the rpm at different speed is ideal; ie 4,000 rpm doing 90mph or 20mph in first. It's so hard to hold off from hearing the engine sing at the higher rpms. |

Must resist reviving during my break in period...100 miles only , a way to go...damn E90 is so fun to drive, makes driving the car slow a difficult exercise in self-control

900 kms so far on the engine. I am probably hitting 5500 rpms on average once a week? I also downshift (steptronic) a bit at the end of the exit ramps to pressure the engine a bit, but nothing too excessive (4500 rpms perhaps)
