Insane Amounts of Brake Dust

Stock 335i brakes and sport package wheels. Crazy amounts of brake dust. I extensively clean/seal tires, but within 30 miles of driving they are covered. Any suggestions?

I have a request

That may include a suggestion.

BMW brakes are designed to stop the car in the shortest distance possible with minimal fade. To accomplish this some of the brake pad material and rotor is slowly worn away (creating dust). Automakers have the power to choose a brake compound that results in very low dust, with the trade-off being longer stopping distances or increased propensity to fade.

I think BMW makes some of the best braking systems for their cars straight out of the box. The one downside is that their is dust on my wheels.

My request is to stop complaining about this - as it is not a problem or defect, but instead an outcome of having awesome brakes. If you cannot handle the amount of dust - and would prefer to have cleaner wheels with less stopping power, please change your brake pads. Or choose one of these...

The Cool Carbon brake pads have much less pad dust than the OEM pads, and we're also running a summer special on them currently

+1 Well said..

For all you guys saying u dont want brake dust..you do realize that the amount of brake dust is proportional to the stopping power of the pad..

Less brake dust = less stopping power

Minimization of Dust is a reasonable requirement especially for street applications. We've covered this before, but for reference, Cool Carbon pads generate less dust (that clings to the wheels) than OE. They actually have less static cling- they of course generate dust, but typically only about 1/3 or less than what you will see with OE onto the wheels. Performance is excellent and starts with friction level just above OE when cold and increasing with temperature. We run them here and are very pleased.

The level of dust from OEM pads is just stupid. I'd take 90% of the braking power for 50% of the dust.

And you know what? They are sticky and are horrible to use at low speeds. I switched to Cool Carbons. Modulation actually exists now, although dust still seems very bad. Maybe like 80% of the original. The dust is also a bronze color now instead of black, which is good I guess.

I have Akebono Ceramic pads and no dust! They stop just fine. BS on stopping power is proportional to dust.

I am running stock pads and while I experienced a lot of brake dust accumulation on my stock wheels, ever since installing after market wheels and keeping them waxed I hardly ever have to clean my wheels between washings. I suspect that the more etched finish on the OEM wheels is more prone to dust accumulation.

Cool Carbon Pads are much easier to modulate and very linear and without the sticky grab at lower speeds. CC pads will dust at a higher rate until fully seated, but still less than OEM. After several hundred miles or following the first few weeks, dusting should diminish noticeably. Not sure about the bronze color; what we typically see is light grey dust. By the way, Cool Carbon has agreed to extend the 30/30 sale but not for much longer.

Brakes work off friction, friction creates heat..which creates more dust as a by-production..there is a direct correlation between how hard a pad bites and the brake dust it generates..its just physics..and will always be true no matter what you may fool yourself into believing.

dust is a by product of braking. the amount of brake dust is largely dependent on the pad material and how quickly the pads heat up and wear. a softer pad material will typically yield more dust. a tire/pad/rotor's ability to stop a car within a certain distance is just as much about thermal dynamics as it is friction coeficients.

let's also consider that a lower dust/harder compound brake pad that while it may not produce as much dust during typical street driving, chances are it will have a propensity to squeal like a bitch under braking.

Cool Carbon brake pads for much less dust and much better feel. I have never hated anything like I hated the stock pads.
