We're staying in San Antonio, mainly because I could use points for a free hotel.

I bought my tickets for turn 12 before they sold out. I'm stoked! It sucks to hear about the traffic but thats to be expected.

got my 3day GA tickets, flight and hotel. just need to figure out how to get to the track in the most efficent way. Can you rent bikes or scooters, should be easier to get through town and traffic with those. We can start a scooter gang while we are out there, who is in??

I got the impression that unless you had a "Special ticket" you would be parking in a separate lot and taking a bus in. Basically they wouldn't let you drive to the track.

I think I read that you cannot even walk in. Youe either need to take their shuttle bus, or have the special parking permit.

I just did a "search for best" option and it came up with row 7 of grandstand 12 so looks like it is still available. Just not the higher section of rows. Still haven't decided if I'm going to go. Just went to Montreal but it looks like this season will go down to the wire so should be an important race by that time. I was just looking for single seats though so may be hard to find a bunch in a row.

Looks like they are adding two more grandstands at turn 9 and turn 11. All the others sold out already. Still I think GA is a good way to go for this race as there are lots of vantage points to watch from and much easier to see a lot of the circuit at once compared to Montreal.

Bought GA tix and have a place to stay in Austin, but would really prefer to camp out nearby and make the trek back into Austin at off hours to save on traffic. I camped at the Indy F1 events and they provided tons of camping spots in one of the overflow parking lots, but I'm guessing the Austin site won't have this sort of thing available?

Bought my tickets as well. Never been to Austin. Any suggestion for a decent and reasonable hotel nearby?

Thanks

Good luck, anything near downtown is either sold out or massively price gouging for the weekend. You might be able to find a rental house on VRBO/Home Away, but most folks seem to have caught on and are asking silly prices for the race weekend.

What are they saying this track will be like? Plenty of passing?

Just a heads up, Austin traffic is terrible on a normal day, with the race i would imagine it will be significantly worse. Austin is a really cool place to visit, great food and music.

I highly recommend taking the trip to Salt Lick if you are a BBQ fan. It was rated the Best BBQ.

Austin traffic can definitely be rough. But it's worth saying that the city isn't a stranger to large influxes of people for events (UT football, ACL, SXSW, etc.). I don't know that traffic within the city is going to be as much of an issue as traffic getting down to COTA. There are only two roads that access the facility and they are both two-lane "country" roads. I'm betting that race day will be a clusterf*ck of epic proportions.

Of course, there are six helicopter pads.

I was planning to get an RV for the weekend, but they've announced they'll only be doing VIP RV access at $15k a pop. No thanks, thankfully I've got a house on Lake Travis. Though it will probably take me three hours to get to the race as opposed to the normal 30 minutes to get to the airport.

How close it it to Lake Travis? I'm going on vacation there this week and figured we would go check out the track.

Whoa. 15 large for RV parking! Hadn't heard that.

Not sure if you've got a PSL or not, but only PSL holders (premium seating) can park at the track and only then if they've purchased a parking spot for the weekend. Otherwise, you won't be able to park at the track. You'll have to take a shuttle from one of the designated parking areas or use another method to get there (taxi, limo, helicopter, etc).

Unless you try to get there at the crack of dawn, I think 2-3 hours travel time is a pretty solid estimate, especially if taking the shuttle.

Depends where on Lake Travis you're coming from. Expect 45 minutes or so from Lakeway depending on traffic.

What he said. Lake Travis is so big that it just depends where you are coming from. I am off of Bee Creek Rd, so very close to Lakeway. If you do plan to check it out, take 183 to the airport as the construction on 71 could have you stuck for 45 minutes.

I am looking into renting a house between Lamar and South Congress for the weekend. Hopefully we'll be able to hire a van to take us out and yeah, I wouldn't find that long of a drive out there surprising based on the roads getting to the track. I have a feeling that this first year may be miserably coordinated.
