First 'proper' watch..

Hi,

I've seen a couple of threads on here with what is basically "watch porn", so i thought this as good a place as any to ask about them

I am toying with the idea of purchasing a Tag Heuer Carrera..

couple of reasons, one being it isn't flash.. it's a dull metal which i like (my current watch is titanium), and of course the cars / racing connections.. however tenuous a link that may be

so, would it be a good buy? i know generally these things hold their value and i would certainly not be buying a new one so i'm kind of think yes..

but other opinions are welcome

Panerai luminor is a fantastic way to go, the iwc portugese very nice very classic design, zenith makes a few classy ones, the tag carrera is a very nice watch as well tho.

Last time i looked at a Tag, what put me off was that they weren't great for time keeping. Their tolerance levels were ridiculously high.

Had my Tag for nearly 5 years now and it has been faultless. Kept perfect time.

I have the above Tag and it is also my 'first' proper watch. I had a Breil a few years ago, which I use as my daily now, but not in the same class as the Tag.

I love the Tag, it get's the odd compliment when people notice it, but at the same time isn't too flashy either

It keeps perfect time also.

I don't get this whole watch business? Does anyone else agree?

Is it a status or wealth thing, I just can't understand the value associated to them and 'One-upmanship' these things seem to bring out.

If I want to know the time I'll:

A: Look at my phone
B: Look at my dash
C: Look at the cooker or mircowave

Just my opinion & not to spark any controversy of course

Kade - have to agree.

My G Shock Giez is solar atomic - no batteries needed, 100% accurate. Cost? £150. Totally bullet proof, no servicing needed, smart enough.

And for running and stuff, a digi G Shock that has been utterly faultless (a couple of new batteries) in 12 years. Cost £120 at the time (which I thought was a lot).

I think BMW ownership requires a flashy watch to complete the "image." I'd rather leave that to Audi drivers ;-)

I DO need a watch but spending £1000s gets one less accurate that needs servicing and has to be flashed around all the time.

Shoes yes, watch no.

The three most well off relatives I have (multi millionaires) don't wear watches - ever.

I know a few very very wealthy people as well, and they all have watch fetishes so i guess it is a personal thing!

Each to their own i suppose!

Argh, I'm being dragged into this debate once more...

It's purely a personal thing. I personally love watches just can't afford to 'collect' them. I have an Omega Seamaster I wear daily (gift from parents for my 21st) and a flashy one that I hardly ever wear (bought on honeymoon); in fact I went to wear it for a wedding the other week but the battery was dead . Two watches that have sentimental value to me, not for show or anything. In fact, my flashy one, I try to hide when I wear it not to attract attention; stupid I know .

I really didn't see the fascination until I got one. When my parents said they wanted to buy me a really nice watch for my Birthday I chose one worth about £150 as I thought anything above that was a complete waste. I really didn't want it but ended up with my Omega. Now, I love it, it's not flashy at all but it very good quality. Now, I love watches full-stop (thanks to my parents ).

Can't explain it, just do
