Extend Warranty Or Not....E92 320d
Hello All,
I'm new to this site and hope you can give me some guidance / info. I've just purchased a used E92 320d M sport - it will arriving early next week. The place I have purchased it from gives me 6 months warranty which is very comprehensive and can be used at main dealers. They have offered me an additional another year for £580 - thus giving me 18mths warranty overall My question is should I purchase the extra warranty now, or not at all. This is the first diesel car I have purchased so I know very little about their ownership and have read the forums etc and note that things like the turbo's etc can go and are a costly replacement. I've always had petrol BMW's before and generally after the initial warramty there has never been the need to extend. The car in question is a 07 plate and has full service history and has done 70k. What do diesel owners recommend - buy the extra warranty or should the free 6mths allow enough time for any obvious issue to present themselves. The car in question drives fantastic and is a 1 owner car - mainly motorway miles - it pulls great and rides very smooth. I checked the likes of warranty direct and warranty wise etc and found the quote for 1 yr warranty to be circa £530 but have heard they can try and get out of warranty claims if they can. My previous car was a 6cyl e46 vert so this is very different but I really liked the low rev pulling power of the diesel. Thank you in adavance for any info you can provide. |

Go for the BMW warranty instead - it's about £700ish for 12 months with £100 excess. There is simply no way I'd pay similar money for an aftermarket warranty instead!

see if you can get a quote here, im not entirely sure if it is possible but if you already have the bmw extended warrenty then it should work. give it a try:
http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx mine is about £350 for the year (exc. breakdown cover), so better and cheaper this way i think |

Thanks for th reply guys.
I should have noted I'm not buying the car from a main dealer - its coming from the stratstone dealer group. They will give me a 6mths warranty for free and I can use main dealers for any repairs etc if reqd. They have then advised I can add £580 and get an additional extra year that provides the same form of comprehensive warranty. I'm not sure whether to just stick with the free 6mth warranty and then get something else from elsewhere or go for their addition now. They advised if I renew their warranty later it will incur a vehicle inspection cost of £130. As the car is is just under 4 years old - it is not under manufacturers warranty anymore and I guess as it doesnt have BMW extended warranty then BMW wont sell me a warranty in 6mths time when the stratstone one expires. Any thoughts...? |

don't bother calling them, just look here, and call the warranty number.
http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx dealers are (mostly) useless |

On balance most people find the BMW Insured warranty the most reliable, even if it's a few quid more and ties you to servicing at BMW dealers. Certainly better than 'Warranty Direct'! The price does go up a bit past 60,000 miles though.
It's probably worth doing a bit of research on the reputation of the warranty you will be getting. In the end, whatever you pay, you hope that you won't need to claim, but that if you do, they will pay up and do the work without question and in this respect the BMW warranty seens to get plenty of good reports on this forum. BUT - remember, it's INSURANCE not a warranty. The bottom line is can you affoerd 'not' to have it. For some, who can withstand a £1K+ 'hit' the choice is to risk it. However, you will see plenty of 'blown turbo' stories on here and as the car has been outside the dealer network, a 'good will' gesture will be hard to negotiate. |

ok guys I called the local dealer - they are quite friendly and got me the relevenat numbers and website etc. Thanks for posting the info earlier guys.
So I did a quite quote and it has come back with the following:- £630 - Full comprehensive warranty £528 - Named Component cover warranty £375 - Drive Line warranty I opted out of the emergency assistance and the above includes £100 excess. On balance this looks pretty good against the aftermarket option from Stratstone. I'll probably go with their 6mth free warranty and then opt for a BMW Insured warranty from there on. Anyone got any experience with the Named Component cover warranty option - its a good price but dont want to compromise my cover. Falmouthboy - thanks for the advice and info too. Just thought I'd mention our last two holidays have been at the Falmouth Beach Resort - great place Falmouth. |

next renewal might go up a bit
Mine is at the £350 stage with £100 excess fully comp. But as said it will double when i go over 60k which might be in 2 years if i still have this car. Still worth it. |

Stratstone have just called me and offered a tyre warranty - basically covers 5 tyres for a claim of up to £250 per tyre for 2 years - £249.00. Covers claims for pot hole damage, puncturse, etc - not wear & tear though.
As the new car is on run-flats not sure if this is a good thing or not - any views or have any of you taken a similar warranty too. |

So does the BMW warranty also cover tyres ? I didn't think it did unless I opted for an additional tyre warranty.
Stratstone is offering the tyre warranty as a separate item to their existing free 6mth warranty. This tyre poilicy is £249 for 2 years. I have decided to go with their 6mth free warranty, and then take out the BMW warranty in December for the following year. If the BMW Warranty also covers tyres then that would be great and I'd take my chances for the next months and decline the stratstone separate tyre warranty. Can someone confirm the BMW Warranty will include tyres (punctures, damage etc) Thanks |

No, the standard BMW warranty does not include tyre insurance.
I'm going to doom myself to fate now but I don't think tyre insurance is worth it - do you really think you'll get more than 1 puncture every 2 years? |

Have to agree - you'd have to be pretty unlucky over two years for this to pay for itself. I'll most likely give it a miss unles they can do a discount at the point of sale.
Thanks for the advise guys |

pot hole damage as well is more for the rims than the tyres. I read alot of threads about cracked alloys.
I use the comprehensive warranty at £40 a month including recovery. NO tyre protection. OR road side pickup if a tyre goes. The only downside i can see. I thought that if the warranty expires for even one day then you could not extend it? BMW all the way in my eyes on this issue oem parts etc guaranteed.

As for frequency, between our 2 cars I have averaged a puncture a year for the past 5 years on run flats (usually a screw or a nail), I can't recall the last puncture on a car with 'normal' tyres. I don't know what it is with runflats, but they seem to puncture more often and of course can't be repaired (although that is another whole debate). |

On reflection - I may just go for the additional tyre warranty as I've seen how much 19" runflats are gonna cost if they need replacing due to punctures etc. I managed to get a small discount so will most likely go with this at the point of collection.
New car is coming on Friday so looking fwd to it - will post up some pics when it arrives. |
