question, how do you know when the turbos are going bad?
have a question here for all the expert. how do you know when the turbos are going bad? i've seen videos of how the turbos whine. but also, will you see boost drop in that case? what other symptoms can we tell?
i've been having some problems, it's on and off, not always happens tho. if i am holding gear, when rpm rises, let's say 2500+, there's some sort of weird noise. i can only hear it when radio is off, window down. it is not exactly like those turbo whine video i've seen. but just some kind of "whine"... it's very fainted. i did datalog, all data looks perfect. so i just want to see if there's any symptoms i can tell if the turbos are going bad....

true, but sometimes when there's something unusual or sounds odd, it feels annoying and want to find the root to fix it

i just replaced my turbos..
They were leaking oil from the seals and the drivers side exhaust line was dumping smoke. The turbos were spooling and holding pressure fine, but they were on their way out. I also had an unbelievable amount of wastegate chatter, even after the BMW 8mm actuator swap. Another telltale sign is a whistling turbo. Here's a youtube video of it.. it didn't happen very often, only about 3-4 times over a 3 month period. I noticed it while driving and pulled into some random neighborhood to shoot this video before it went away.

it definitely doesn't sound like those "turbo siren", but more like some sort of accessory whine noise.. it is very fainted and not producing all the time.. it's kinda on and off thing... hard to describe.

Exactly what I was going to say. Don't worry about it. You'll know when they need to be changed.

Im Not trying too highjack this thread but curious about turbos failing also. I have an 07 335i with 37,000. I have been running COBB tune for a bit now and recently starter using stage 2+FMIC. I dont believe I have any turbo issues, but Im guessing Id be looking for smoke as a sign of turbo failure? And I have a third party warranty. If at some point turbos did go bad, I could uninstall the COBB AP, but what about the downpipes? Could the stay on the car or would they also have to be removed. Again sorry, Im not trying to highjack this thread, just getting a bit of info. Thanks all..
