"Clear bra" circa 1998 ... does it eat paint?!

Guys... some help here.

Waaaaay back in 1998 there was a "clearbra" that did not
have the thick, pliable characteristics of those products today.

This one was very thin and had a matte texture. It was a piece
of shit product i'm sure but that's besides the point.

Fast forward 10 years and I am looking at this mask and it
has totally degraded and it *looks* like the paint is erroded
underneath, replaced with rust. I can't peel anything off,
like i said, it was paper thin when applied new.

I took a fine grit sandpaper (this is going to be a 1 or 2 yr beater car anyway)
to see if i could remove this "coating".
I rubbed lightly, but not too lightly, and it looked like I was removing
RUST! I didn't rub for long, never once observed paint dust, and before
i knew it i was at bare metal! "Yes", i went caveman on it, "No" i wouldnt
normally be so crude.

So my question...wtf is going on here?!

I was originally just going to ask how to get this shit off, but now i'm
thinking there's RUST underneath it, is that possible?

I dunno man!

Holy crap. I'm subscribing.

Looks like that clear bra trapped moisture under the plastic and just let it do its thing to the paint and metal.

Wow. Maybe they used some sort of adhesive backing on it when originally applied? It looks like it ate straight through the clear and paint down to primer and bare metal. Spray paint the hood

Wow. I've never seen anything even remotely like that before.

i take them off from time to time, but never seen anything like this.
Then again 1998, i was just a kid and the clear bras were in initial phase.

To me, that looks like the car may have been poorly repainted (then clear bra installed). Just a theory.

Yeah, clearbra is supposed to be replaced every 3 to 5 years or that crap happens. Ive actually seen a car worse than that, as my friend does the clearbra install for a living and it is a nightmare to remove.

This sounds very plausible, as clear bra on fresh paint wouldn't allow the paint to cure fully.
