Transmission error at start up, no stored faults

Hey guys I have been getting a transmission error when I start up my car. It doesn't matter if it's a cold start or not. He symbol looks like a gear with an exclamation point in it.

I also get a warning on the iDrive that P, R, N, or D may not be selectable. However, this only stays on my dash for about 10 seconds then. Then i can put it into drive.

I am NOT getting any stored faults....which is odd to me.

I think my mechatronics sleeve is leaking....I saw some oil there when i was changing a tie rod.

I was just wondering if any of you who have had a mechatronics sleeve fail on them had similar symptoms?

I'm doing a complete fluid flush as well as an oil filter housing gasket and mechatronics sealing sleeve swap in the next week or 2. This will include trans and diff oil flushes. I just hope it's the sleeve thats causing this error.

UPDATE: I just want to update this thread and let everyone know what happened. The error was caused by a faulty gear shift lever assembly. Similar to what people experience when you can't shift into DS/M mode....except mine was just starting to go.

There was a shadow fault stored but my BT tool failed to see it. Anyway, it was covered under CPO so I just had to pay the deductible.

About 64k.

Never heard of the mechatronics sealing sleeve issue? It's pretty common for the ZF transmissions, on pre lci models. Or never heard of my issue with the error not being stored?

Never heard of either, but i'm glad you posted. I'm at higher mileage so it's good to know if something happens like this

Thanks man. I haven't gotten the error in the past few days...knock on wood.

However, I tried installing springs today and I can't. My strut is stuck in my fender, spring is compressed all the way and I damaged my fender.

I'm bugging out....

This has happened to me many times over the corse of my cars life. Nothing has ever be diagnosed or resolved. My car has been in limp mode several times and it usually will display that error at the same time.

All im saying is that its happened to me and never had any issues from it. Its been happening since it had 300 miles on it in 2006 about twice a year. I have no idea why or how to get ride of it and there is no way to replicate at the dealer.

Do you have a AT or MT?

I confirmed today that my mechatronics sealing sleeve is leaking on my ZF transmission. I think oil is seeping into the connector :/

The leak is very small. My car has to sit for about 2 or 3 days and I will see a dime size puddle on the floor. But the fluid is pitch black. I want to flush the fluid as well as all the other fluids but I just worked on my car for 14 hours and I'm beat....

Haven't seen the error in a couple days and I did a 3 hour drive a couple days ago.

Story of my life

I was not able to drive my car for more than a year because of this Gear with ex mark. First it is orange than becomes red.... I tried everything
1.Seals
2.Oil
3.Connections
4.Mechatronic
5.The whole gearbox
and finally it turned out to be the GEARSHIFT lever!!!
A friend of mine is testing the car at the very moment and since Monday there are still NO mistakes (I pray every night for this)
I will update soon if this is really the cure but you could pm me for more detailed info.

Today it DING DONG me again. It is a never ending HELL!!! Now I really do NOT know what the hell is wrong...
I would probably try to check if something could destroy the shifter for some time ----higher voltake or current??? I really do NOT know now!
I do NOT have stored faults but during the process I managed several times to deliver the car with the fault live to my mechanicwhen the car is left over night or for a longer period - then after start everything runs as good as new)
1.Solenoids in the MEchatronic
2.Interlock and shiftlock - those are functions driven by the shifter
I was really sure everything was over but DING DING :mad0 259:

I'm confused as to what you're saying.

But the error hasn't come back in over 2 weeks. However, my mechatronics sealing sleeve is leaking.
