one for the BMW tech's - would a Security Update at main dealer remove a re-map

Bit of an odd question but bear with me.

Anyone know exactly what is involved when main dealer runs a security update on the car (to stop ODBK key clone theft) - what part of the ECU are they talking to?

Anyone with a remapped car had it back following the security update and found it had gone back to stock spec?

What does the security update involve?

Is it something we all should be installing?

Can it be done DIY with recent datens pack?

Key cloning has been going on for a few years, here's just one article about ithttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19562487

Yes, we should all have the update, newer cars from about 2011 I think had the update already applied. The update doesn't disable the OBD port, it does stop the window from being wound down by using only the key.

Yes, it can be done with the latest daten pack. Add +OKOS to the VO and update the CAS module.

Not had a security update, but my remap was partially removed (only certain maps were wiped back to stock) when I got my car software (I-level) upgraded using ISTA (which involved programming, N.B: this is different than coding).

Luckily the chaps at Ecotune were happy to put it back on for me, they spent a good 2-3 hours re-tuning it as a lot of the parameters had changed.

It just depends what the security update involves, if it touches any of the components that manage fuel injection, throttle control, basically any components that your remapper changed, then there is a good chance it could put some things back to stock.

But if what litany said it's true, and it only affects the CAS, then I'd imagine you will be OK! Difficult to tell to be honest.

Either way, I'd go for the security update, as that is obviously more important. You could always go back and checked out by whoever remapped it to see if it's still all there.

The security update affects only the CAS, can't see why it would affect fuel injection? When my car had the security update applied it didn't affect the remap that I had.

It's just a CAS update which adds increased security meaning that an existing key is required for new key programming in theory preventing OBD thefts. This lasted about 2 mins before a Russian teenager hacked it again. It's still worth it I suppose.

Dealers have only limited access to ISTA /P meaning the update would be part of a complete measure plan. ISTA /P will update all modules to latest I-Level. If your DME hasn't been updated for a while then it's likely it will be during this procedure. Meaning a custom map will be gone. I believe that's the only way they do it. They cannot update CAS only without ISTA /P EXPERTMODE.
