e90 162 Styling & Tire Questions
I've had my e90 for almost 2 years now (this April) and I have a few questions about tires.
I absolutely LOVE my 162 Styling wheels, just even looking at how it brings out my car is great. However, while driving my e90, I'm trying to figure out if it's the tires or the actual sports suspension in the car that causes not such a smooth ride, especially with the occasional "BANG!" sound after hitting one of Jersey's infamous potholes ;-) Luckily, for me, I haven't bent the rims but there have been occasions where I thought I had since it was such an annoying "BANG" sound. In any case, my question is, does anyone think 17" rims (let's say from TireRack) will help ease my tension whenever I see a bump in the road ahead? As a FYI, 162 Styling rims are 18". Or is it really the sports suspension that doesn't make it such a smooth ride. I really hate to change my wheels since I love my 162 stylings but I figured maybe it's time to get more TIRE and less RIM. Would 17" rims fit correctly into an e90 with sports suspension? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much if you have not incurred any damage in two years of use. I get the "bang" on 17" RFT's over certain bumps. I attribute it to the stiff sidewalls of the RFT's transmitting the impact, however it is auditory only; the impact is not felt, the suspension doing its job of snubbing out the harshness. I can only assume this is how the car was engineered to perform and a tradeoff for the peace of mind and weight savings (no spare) engendered by the use of RFT's.

Thanks, I was hoping you would say that. Really didn't want to go from 18" 162's to 17" (some other stylings). :-)
I really do try to avoid them on the road, but sometimes there's other things on the Jersey roads that you have to pay attention before those bumps ;-)

Yeah, the 162s look great on the E90. Run flats, however, ride terribly. If you like the wheels, keep them, then replace the tires with non-runflats. You can wait until your current tires wear out, or replace them now. Since you won't have a spare, get the ContiComfort kit or M mobility kit in case of a flat.

Definately try replacing your current runflats with non-runflats. The ride will be much better. |

It's also worthy to note that I recently switched from the non-sport to sport suspension and the sport suspension actually handles potholes better (it produces a more muffled "bang" IMO)! |

I'm not sure, but I get this "bang" also when I'm not careful and didn't avoid the potholes, the bang can be so big that it stops my CD playing.

Yeah, I experience simliar issues with my RFTs when I hit any potholes. Just curious, do the non-RFT look identical to the RFTs. I was thinking about switiching, but I do like the way my RFTs look. They're Potenzas BTW. Thanks.

Ditch the RFT's. I've got 162's rolling on non-RFT winter tires and the "BANG" i used to notice is now gone. The car also feels more agile, light and responsive.

I liked the look of 162's so I got 17" replica 162's for my winter set-up, not all 17" wheels fit though, had to test fit some to make sure that the caliper was cleared.
Later,
