i have deep scratches near top 4 inches of right rear door window on car on OUTSIDE of window glass. Thing is I looked car over good and could not really see them until I put the 20% tint on last week...now they show up bright and white.

I wanna know what BMW will do for US if we make them aware of the scratching of the windows. I dont have tint, so thats not my concern...my concern is having the scratches on my window period.

Is there any due process?

Here is a little snip from Tint Protector's site that explains what is causing the tint to scratch.

"What is causing my window tint to streak and scratch and how can Tint Protector Moleskin Felt help?

Every car door has weather strip seals on either side of the window glass. These weather-strips touch the window creating a seal to help keep dirt, water and noise from entering your door panel and vehicle. If you look close you will notice the outside seal has a fuzzy layer of felt applied to it.

Certain models of cars only have felt on one side of the window canal of the door. Their manufacturers neglected to put this felt on the inside seal of the window.

This inside window seal is made of hard plastic. With no felt applied to it like the outside seal, this hard weather strip will start to collect dirt and dust which in turn rubs against your expensive window tint causing vertical lines and scratches. This not only looks cosmetically bad, but it destroys the window film causing you to have to return to the tint shop and re-tint the car all over again."

Hey guys...my dealer told me today that they are replacing the window trims/seals now under warranty. Check my post today in the "Scratched tint!?" thread on m3post for a little more detail.

Don't bother with the dealer. I heard they are replacing them with the same hard plastic seals.

What a waste.

they won't even replace a thing. they only took the buttom belt off from the original. it did the trick, it fixed the scratching issue. they also had my windows tinted free of charge.

Yep, the coupes have the problem too. Tint Protector has a kit for them as well.

Why not just buy the kit and forget about it?

My E92 has not had a since scratch.

I also owned my E90 for 1.5 years 22k miles, now on 3 years with the E92 44k miles.

I can tell that mine will scratch, I'm getting tint installed next week. As of now, I get streaks fairly often for no reason, so I'm sure it will scratch.

I had an e90 before with tint and no tint protector; my fronts were scratched to hell. I now have another e90 and installed tint protector; so far, it's doing its job well and has prevented any scratches from forming. The install itself isn't too complicated, but it is a bit unnerving. You have to remove all the trim and door panels, disconnect wires, etc. I don't really like to watch my car being torn apart, and I get especially nervous about door panels since there is always the chance of causing rattles that can never really be fixed.

Anyways, my friend did the install for me and he's been working in the automotive tint industry for many years now. He took a look at the moleskin and he said he wasn't too happy with the quality of adhesive that comes with tint protector. He said it didn't look/feel very strong, and he said it might actually start to melt when summer rolls around, which means I would have to reinstall new moleskin.

He also mentioned that the moleskin he's worked with had much stronger adhesive, and you could buy yards of it for pretty cheap at your local home supply center (Home Depot, Osh); yards of it for $10 or so.

In summary, tint protector does work in preventing scratches on your window tint, but the longevity of the adhesive is suspect. I guess I'll see what happens when summer arrives.

I just checked my inner seal when i went out to lunch and my top seal looks like it already has felt on it. I may be wrong but it "felt" that way.

The outer seal has felt (outside if the window), but the inner seal does not. But you say you felt felt, so you felt special.

envision,

I'll have to snap a pic but i am sure it has it. How ever the part that is inside the door may not have it. The only reason I posted was since I have an 2010 LCI they may have made the correction to the seal.

That'd be great news if you do have the inner seal felted. If that's the case, since we all have the same seals for our windows, BMW should be able to replace our unfelted seals with your new felted inner seals.

I installed adhesive felt strips from Durofelt on our TL 5 years ago and haven't had scratching or adhesion issues since. I would buy again with confidence and the price is right.
As long as the window seals are clean, you won't get scratches, but who has the time to check and clean the window seals. Putting on the felt was unnerving the first time, but it is insurance that your tint won't get scratched.

Durofelt

BTW - i didn't bother to felt or moleskin my e90 after tint.

I just made the appointment to get tint, and I asked if they would install this for me when they did the windows. They told me that the only reason tint would scratch is if the installer didn't install it right, and messed something up inside the door.

He said he has done tons of BMWs and never had a single complaint. They also have a lifetime warranty so if they say that, then they can replace it when it happens... until I get tired of having to get it fixed multiple times (if it does happen)
