Any one remember Vicky Butler-Henderson on Five Gear in the 330d on a track day? Demolished some serious petrol metal

If you love to drive (presumably why you bought a BMW) then keep the 335i.
If you want to save pennies, by a Mondeo.

The 335i in third gear can cover 50 - 70 mph in 3 seconds dead, not sure how much extra time it will need for the extra 5 mph to hit 75mph but definately no more than a second at the most..........in the same ball park as the 335d in kickdown and noticeably quicker than the 330d. http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/carg..._bmw_335i.html OP - Test drive a 330d and then make a decision on which car best suits your needs

Unless you are doing uber milleage all of sudden I wouldn't have thought you will save very much cash downgrading to a 330d from your 335i once you take the hit trading in unless ofcourse you plan to keep it for a long long time. If you are trading in for a new car regardless then then 330d probibly ticks the boxes based on what you've said.
Perhaps a bit left field but for real comfort and good mpg have you considered a 520d? I think I'd like to get try one at some point. If you want to save some serious money, you could always do what I have done and go from a 335i to Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 cdti Yes it's a POS to drive but I get to work and back in roughly the same time, cost half to fill and does twice the distance.. road tax is £35 and works in the snow without winter tyres and I don't care where it's parked, but whats the fun in that lol Last edited by Ham09; 10-18-2010 at 04:24 PM.. |

Ham09 - it's hardly a "downgrade" from a 335i to a 330d. Some of you need to get real, honestly. We're fortunate to be able to afford, own and run and be happy (well, some of us) with a BMW. Some people would love one and can't afford it for what ever reason.
I could go and buy an M3 tomorrow - but I'd rather save the money and keep it for a rainy day. Some people have reasons..some have circumstances. A 318 or a M3 - we should appreciate what we have. |

An opportunity has presented itself to me and I'm potentially looking to change cars.
Have been looking at 330d's and 335i's (both manual) and it's a close one to call. Neither car is a proper drivers car if we're splitting hairs about things, which we do seem to be doing on this thread, but both are hugely competent road cars. It's a tough decision to make, but a great position to be in Matt |

I know the thread stated 330d but surprised no one has mentioned the Alpina D3 Bi-turbo. Test drove the 330d and D3 BT back to back and the Alpina was so much better and every respect. Engine revved freely to redline and delivered power throughout, steering was better weighted and more direct and the ride well that was simply superb. Yes it is true the 330d is ultimately more tunable but a remapped D3 BT is in the region of 245bhp & 450Nm and weights approx 135kg less
These figures need to be taken lightly as they are based on the manufactures/suppliers bhp & torque figures so I'm sure we are all aware there could well be some difference vehicle to vehicle an not forgetting marketing hype but you get the point... BMW 330d (Auto) 1625 kg 245 bhp 520 Nm (383 ft-lbs) 150 bhp per ton 320 Nm per ton (236 ft-lbs) Superchips 330d (Auto) 1625 kg 313 bhp 627 Nm (462 ft-lbs) 190 bhp per ton 385 Nm per ton (284 ft-lbs) Alpina D3-Biturbo (Auto) 1490 kg 214 bhp 450 Nm (332 ft-lbs) 143 bhp per ton 302 Nm per ton (223 ft-lbs) Superchips Alpina D3-Biturbo (Auto) 1490 kg 244 bhp 484 Nm (357 ft-lbs) 163 bhp per ton 324 Nm per ton (239 ft-lbs) |

Seems a bit tall to me! Probably more like 280bhp from the 245bhp unit. Too many tuning places over egg the pudding in order to lure in impressionable clientele.
My 204bhp E46 330d has been done and it's probably got 240bhp at a push. It's exactly the same map as many who claim 260bhp for the tune. The car feels great and is considerably more responsive, so either way, I'm happy. Matt |

Don't do it, I've been down the diesel route twice, there is nothing like a 6 pot BMW petrol on full song.

Perhaps it's like when you forget about the non-stop 5 times a day sex with your ex-girlfriend and learn to appreciate your wife, or something like that. |
