What would you guys pay for one, its in pretty good condition, no rust. odometer shows 38k miles (might be 138k) but overall the car looks good. what should i pay for one? manual transmission

Beware,check for non-visible rust issue. I bought a 1974 2002 Tii and discovered multiple rust issues that you could not detect with the naked eye,to make a long story short I had to buy another 2002 just to be able to restore my car and still it is not finished. Anyway it is a great BMW, but remember its an almost 40 year old car, the elements usually take their toll on such a car. Mine is Inca Red,which is like an orange red. I installed a 5 speed 320i tranny,new engine with twin 45 side draft Webbers,new brakes, ect,ect. Be ready to invest in updating multiple parts in the car,but when you finish it,its really worth it.

Assuming rust isn't an issue i would say about $30k. Like Maranello455 said rust is a MAJOR issue with these cars.

Its a major issue with ALL cars from the late 60s -early 70s


Basically at that time, the only major source of chromium outside of the USSR was located in the country of Rhodesia. Rhodesia had a massive civil war and as a result their production of chromium stopped.

No chromium means no stainless steel and that means cars just rust away.

I had a 75 2002 as my first car. If I had to do it all over again, it wouldn't be any newer than 74 so that I wouldn't have to mess around with smog.

Yeah 30k is way too much I think. At least for me. There are two 76s on eBay around 15-16k

That difference would make a considerable difference in what I would pay, and shouldn't be that hard to determine with a professional inspection. And everyone's comments here regarding hidden rust are absolutely correct. I had a 76 2002 in the mid 80's which saw plenty of track time during that day, and everytime we did further chassis upgrades we would find sections corroding away....and this was in California.

I had a 1970, a 1972 and a 1975 2002. The 1975 model had issues with the then new smog controls. The best one was my 1972, Colorado color, a very cool car.

Having said that, I would not be tempted to try to resurrect one now due to parts availability, the mentioned rust issues, and general lack of mechanical ability on my part.

But if there is no rust problem, and you are up to the task, go for it, a great piece of fun history.

There is a very interesting story in the current issue of Roundel magazine, where the author was restoring a tii. Very interesting read, and it made me realize that restoration is not for the faint of heart. If you are a BMW CCA member, or know someone who is, it is worth the read.

On the other hand, there is a network of fellow BMW restoration fans out there, therefore, access to advice (and parts!).

well a little rust is not a problem to me. about 5 years ago i bought a 66 corvair in crappy condition, change some floor board and a few body panels and fully restored it in about a month. im just looking for something i could get cheaper and eventually fully restore it.

Are you saying cars before and after this are made with stainless steel?

yeah the one i was looking at, sold for a little under 3000. im just not familiar with the older bmw's so not sure what to pay. but ill keep looking for something interesting.

Yes. Though I dont remember the exact dates that the shortage started

Stainless steel is an alloy of chromium iron and carbon.

If you are not sure if its 38k or 138K than you have not looked at this car closely enough. The answer y to that question will be obvious if you put it up on a lif and examine in detail, and when you're done you'll have a better feel of the value of the overall car. FWIW, I had a 76 2002, in California no less, and by 100k the spare tire compartment was so rusted that if you put a tire in there it would drop through to the ground. The car was eventually totaled (actually parted out) purely for rust reasons.
