Speeding Ticket Question

I live in Cali, and I got a speeding ticket for doing 79 in a 35 MPH zone.

That's 44 MPH over.

Does anybody know how much the ticket will be?

OMG that's freaking insane. What were you thinking man??? No only did you put yourself in danger but you were endangering others as well. You're lucky they didnt impound your car and arrest you for going more than DOUBLE the speed limit. Man I dont even think going to court will help you. The judge will get pissed off and might give you a bigger fine. Even I dont drive that crazy and IM ALL FOR SPEED. Jeez...they might give you 2 points for reckless driving/exhibition of speed. You're crazy man. You need help!

Consider yourself lucky because that could have easily landed you in the slammer. That's exhbition of speed without a doubt. I'm still shocked you didn't get booked??

How is your record?

You are looking at loosing your license.

You really should get a lawyer.

By the way; nice car, but you need chrome tail pipes.

Lol. You know what? When I first got the ticket, I was going insane - asking everybody what I should do, what's gonna happen, etc. After I got some answers, I cooled down. I just made that post like it was nothing, huh?

Well.. It's my first ticket. I had just gotten off the freeway, and it was insanely traffic - it was 8:45am. I was frustrated, and the street I was on, is really wide, and there was NOBODY on the street. I just hit the gas, and I honestly didn't think I was going that fast. I was just cruisin', it felt like 50. All of a sudden, I noticed a cop standing outside his car, and he jumped in the street and threw his hands in the air. I hit my brakes, but when my car stopped, I was pretty far away from him, so he signaled for me to reverse.

He came over, showed me the radar for 79 and gave the ticket. He said, "Don't even go to court. Just pay it and do your traffic school". Strange this was, he was really nice about it. He didn't yell at me or anything. I was a little shocked I was doing 79, so I was like, "I'm sorry officer.." and he just said, "No problem. Drive safe."

Everyone told me to fight it because there's a good chance he won't show up. I got the ticket 20 minutes away from where I live. I heard I can call and request a court near my house, is that true? 'Cause if it is, and I push back the court date, that's a better chance of the cop not showing up.

Also, I heard it's $11 for every mile you go over. NaTuReBoY, I don't know how your dads ticket was $350 for only 10 MPH over. That's insane. My cousin was doing 95 in a 60, or a 90 in a 65 - something like that, and his ticket was about $350-$400.

A lot of people are giving me different prices, so I don't know. I also don't know why I didn't get arrested, and I don't know about points. The cop would've said something..

Did you get your ticket on Riverside Drive around the 170/101 freeways? There's a really good sweeper there and from my experience a cop just stands there under the freeway overpass waiting with his radar gun.

Good luck man.

It was on Tampa, right after you get off the 5.

If I were you, I'd take the advice of the officer and go to traffic school. You'll pay the ticket and spend 8 hours (or the equivalent on-line), but the ticket will be dismissed.
You could try to fight it, but in good conscience you did what you were cited for, and you have a legal remedy to keep it off your record. Sometimes when people try to beat the system, it can backfire on you and you might end up being worse for wear.

I agree. This advice is especially true in LA county.

But let's say I pay the ticket and do the traffic school online.

Then I make an appointment for a court date to see the judge, fight my case, and have it reversed. I'll simply say, "I did my duty and paid for the ticket. I'm here to fight my case to have the fines reversed." If I win, I get my money back. If I lose, they keep the money, I come home.

If the cop doesn't show up, I get my money back.

No?

no. when you go to the place they ask you if you would like to plead guilty or not. I've never heard anyone paying first and fight later.

That's right. By paying the ticket (and going to traffic school if you're eligible), you are admitting guilt. Going to traffic school is a mechanism by which your ticket will be invisible to insurance companies. You can't go to traffic school and also fight the ticket. It's an either/or situation. Of course, you can always just pay the ticket straight up and not go to traffic school. The fine will be the same. But you will be assessed points on your DMV record.
Also, and hopefully nobody here will ever need to know this, if you ever get a speeding ticket over 100 MPH, that offense will count against you in criminal history if you ever get caught for a crime. And criminal history is an important factor to judges when determining sentences.

If you ever get caught for anything above 90, that's already reckless endangerment. Any speed above that they can arrest you and impound your car; that's considered a felony. Misdemeanors/negligence can be ignored but felonies cant. THey will stay on your record forever.
