I want to upgrade my brake rotors and pads this coming spring and have been looking at a number of different options over the past couple of months for slotted rotors and good pads. I use my car as a daily driver but also plan to take it to the track a couple times this summer. I read a lot of people on here, as well as other forums, weren’t completely happy with the stoptech or dba 4000 setup, Racing Brake costs too much, I couldn’t find zimmermann rotors that were just slotted. This left me with EBC as the only choice at the end.

However! I recently came across R1 Concepts rotors, and they look pretty good. I haven’t read too many reviews about them on e90 but saw pretty consistent reviews in their favor on other forums. Their premium rotors look nice (coated on the hub and in the vanes to prevent rust) and they are priced pretty well too. What I also found interesting was that R1 allows you to custom slot the rotors, send them a design and they will do it for you. I was thinking of getting them to custom slot mine to look somewhat like the brembo 2-piece rotors, http://www.racetechnologies.com/imag...4304949727.jpg.

I was quoted a price of about $600 for all 4 rotors, this includes shipping and the custom slotting. Here’s the rotor…

What does everyone think about this deal? Do they look good? Is this something you would buy? Are there any downsides of custom slotting?

I haven't read too much reviews about R1 Concepts but from what I have read, the reviews were pretty positive. Didn't know that they offer customized designs so that's pretty sweet.

$600 for 4 rotors is right about average for aftermarket. If you like em, go for it. Let us know how they turn out.

BTW - can't go wrong with EBC. Tried and tested brand. On a lesser degree, I heard BrakePerformance.com was good too, esp for the price.

I'm going to be going ahead with these soon, its my next purchase, but just have to wait a little bit as my new alufelgen rims and oil catch can are coming in today.

I'll be going with a custom slot design so I'll probably do a review when i have them installed.

Slotted rotors are a waste of money. You will not notice anything other than more noise when braking. The slots grind on the pads and make more noise, especially under hard brake application. Drilled and/or slotted rotors are not needed for any reason on these cars. If you're really tracking the car very hard, you will need big brakes (Stoptech, Alcon, PFC, AP Racing). Otherwise good pads - Pagid RS14/19/29 or PFC 01/06/08 on stock rotors will give you enough brakes to go to the track for DEs.

i would very much like to go with a BBK, but no way can I justify the $5000 investment when I have a long list of other mods I'd rather do first. Are slotted rotors MUCH noisier than stock blanks?

Well, there's no benefit to slotted rotors to begin with, so using them is just overpaying for something that does nothing to help slow the car down. And yes, I've heard some noisy and some very noisy slotted rotors. They make a weird noise especially when you really push the pedal hard.

am using crossed drilled r1. ran them with cool carbon pads ~ brakes felt really strong. currently using posi quiet pads, and it still feels stronger than stock. no noise level difference compared to stock. not to mention, looks pretty cool!!
but i think i paid way less than that for them. i had contacted them directly, and if i am not wrong, it was 5 bills with rotors and pads
i am still to hear any good stories about the slotted ones tho. all got noise related problems.

let me know how they turn out... i was supposed to order them this month... but i dont remmeber what happend yesterday, I was on the phone with bmw dealership and the guy gave me a good deal on the BMW performance exhaust... next thing i know, i have an appointment for this sat morning to have it installed. it all happened so suddenly

I changed the rotors to the r1 drilled and slotted, and got akebono pads. Initial bite is definitely decreased from OEM but they're still strong after that. I have no regrets at changing them and love the fact that I haven't washed my rims in 2 weeks and they still look clean!!!

just got my R1 installed today. havent really had the time to test them out, have to let them bed in first properly. the place where i got them installed did the initial bed in for me but after driving back to work on the highway, i noticed squealing at lower speeds coming to a stop. im guessing i just have to let them work in a bit more over the next 200km and the squeal will go away?

My Premium rotors are stronger than my E-lines and has a black e-coat applied on the center hub, inner vane structure, and outer rim of the rotor for rust protection. My E-line are dipped entirely in silver zinc. Premium rotors have better air flow because they are built with a 50/50 center split vane structure design (some also comes curved and columned) for efficient air distribution to try to eliminate hear spots.

I think the consensus is that they offer no real increases in performance, but if you like them, go ahead and buy them, they won't hurt anything, and they'll look cool (which is what most people are after).

There is the possibility of being slightly noisier that blank rotors, and maybe some decreased pad life.
